Survival analysis of 971 Cancer Patients Treated with Traditional Korean Medicine Recent 10 years. Kim Jun-Young Dept. of Oriental Medicine Graduate School, Daejeon University (Directed by Prof. Cho Jung-Hyo, O.M.D. Ph.D.) Abstract Objective : The purpose of this study is to analyze the survival rate of cancer patients who had been treated with Traditional Korean Medicine. Materials and Methods : We investigated the patients treated with Traditional Korean Medicine more than 1 month at out patient department or the patients hospitalized more than 20 days at the Daejeon Oriental Hospital of Daejeon University from October 2004 to September 2014. The medical records of 971 cancer patients were analyzed. The survival rates and median survival times were estimated by the Kaplan-Meier method and Log-rank test was used to compare the differences between the survival rates according to each clinical characteristics. The survival rates of all cancer patients and except thyroid cancer patients were estimated. The survival rates of Liver, thyroid, colon & rectum, stomach, breast, pancreas, lung cancer patients by gender, age, stage at diagnosis were respectively estimated and the survival rates of 203 terminally ill cancer patients were also estimated. Results: The median survival time of 971 patients was 3.28years (95% CI 2.87 - 3.65). 1,3,5-year survival rates were 83.2% (95% CI 80.7 - 85.7), 52.2% (95% CI 48.6 - 55.8), 38.6% (95% CI 34.8 - 42.3) respectively. The median survival time of 971 patients was 3.28years (95% CI 2.87 - 3.65). 1,3,5-year survival rates were 83.2% (95% CI 80.7 - 85.7), 52.2% (95% CI 48.6 - 55.8), 38.6% (95% CI 34.8 - 42.3) respectively. The median survival time of except thyroid cancer patients was 2.98years (95% CI 2.71 - 3.41). 1,3,5-year survival rates were 81.9% (95% CI 79.3 - 84.6), 49.7% (95% CI 46.0 - 53.4), 36.2% (95% CI 32.4 - 39.9). The median survival time of liver cancer patients was 2.27years (95% CI 1.21 - 3.50). 1,3,5-year survival rates were 69.6% (95% CI 59.8 - 79.4), 46.1% (95% CI 35.0 - 57.1), 30.0% (95% CI 19.5 - 40.5). The median survival time of thyroid cancer patients was not reported because the patients were survived more than 50%. 1,3,5-year survival rates were 98.8% (95% CI 96.6 - 100.0), 94.5% (95% CI 86.0 - 100.0), 89.0% (95% CI 75.7 - 100.0). The median survival time of colon & rectum cancer patients was 3.11years (95% CI 2.67 - 3.58). 1,3,5-year survival rates were 89.3% (95% CI 83.7 - 94.8), 51.3% (95% CI 41.8 - 60.9), 25.0% (95% CI 16.0 - 34.0). The median survival time of stomach cancer patients was 1.96years (95% CI 1.71 - 2.52). 1,3,5-year survival rates were 77.2% (95% CI 70.1 - 84.3), 30.9% (95% CI 22.4 - 39.4), 24.4% (95% CI 16.2 - 32.6). The median survival time of breast cancer patients was 8.04years (95% CI 7.01 - 10.69). 1,3,5-year survival rates were 98.5% (95% CI 96.4 - 100.0), 91.7% (95% CI 86.4 - 96.9), 79.3% (95% CI 70.4 - 88.1). The median survival time of pancreas cancer patients was 1.01years (95% CI 0.80 - 1.21). 1,3,5-year survival rates were 51.1% (95% CI 37.1 - 65.1), 6.8% (95% CI 0.0 - 14.0), 3.4% (95% CI 0.0 - 9.3). The median survival time of lung cancer patients was 2.07years (95% CI 1.47 - 2.53). 1,3,5-year survival rates were 74.2% (95% CI 65.1 - 83.3), 34.3% (95% CI 23.9 - 44.6), 22.2% (95% CI 12.6 - 31.8). The median survival time of terminally ill cancer patients was 0.39 years(about 20months) (95% CI 0.33 - 0.44). 0.5 year survival rates were 40.7% (95% CI 33.6 - 47.7). Conclusion : Even though all parts of the survival rates of cancer patients treated with Traditional Korean Medicine are not higher than previous study, the survival rates of liver, breast, pancreas, lung cancer patients are higher than other study. The survival rates and median survival time of terminally ill cancer patients are also higher than other previous study. Well-designed and prospective clinical trials would be recommended to provide more reliable evidence. Key words : Survival analysis, Cancer patients, Korean Oriental Medicine, Recent 10 years.
