This study aimed to find out formation & interior/exterior spatial structure of Gwangju Town Wall and re-express afterward changes in the Town Wall remains & its historical space. The Wall guessed to have been built at the end of Goryeo Dynasty & the beginning of Joseon Dynasty and its interior/exterior facilities have almost disappeared hard to find its traces, but since its stylobate and walls damaged during composition of National Asia Culture Center in 2007 were dug out, historical interest in them explored and the City of Gwangju began to be interested in restoration & research of the Wall and even in its cultural e-expression. In this context, this study attempted to figure out changes in the traces of the Wall having disappeared from the beginning of Japanese Occupation period through ancient literature, maps and the like, and present direction on its historical space through considering Gwangju-folly project being done. Though the record on building Gwangju Town Wall is not revealed up to now, and judging from the fact that its initial record is shown in Jiriji the Annals of King Sejong, its building might have been done, at the latest, sometime before the reign of King Sejong. The Wall with its circumference about 2.5㎞ and height about 2.8m, is situated in a naturally formed river bank lower in the danger of flooding due to its relatively high altitude among flood plain terrains of great rivers. When the Wall is connected following its sites, it bears the shape of a pentagon rather than a square, but in most maps, it has been depicted as a square. Bangan Map certified by Bibyensa(or Border Defense Council of Joseon), Jeoji Map, and Local Map made in 1872 all drew clear battlements of the Wall, indicating the Wall was built in a way that allowed it to easily defend what's within. Buildings inside of it were condensed sough of Chungjang-ro-2-ga with the current Chungjang-ro as northeast axis. Its inside was largely divided into Gaeksa District, Asa District, Eupchang District, and Jangcheong District, which district was in charge of rituals, administrative works, warehouses, and the military functions. Its outside was divided into Seongjeo District near the Wall and Woechon District distant from it, and again Seongjeo District was divided into Four Directions often called 'Eupsabang(or Town's Four Directions).' Since Japanese Occupation Period, the Wall began to change internally and externally, and such changes started off with breaking down the Wall. Building Chungjang-ro and Geunnam-ro Boulevards required the interior and exterior, traditional spatial blocks, to be torn down one after another, buildings inside of it either torn down or utilized for other purposes. Tearing down the Wall was not only its physical demolition but the city's expansion into its outside plus a symbol of demolition of physical & social border between Koreans and Japanese. These modernized changes have kept on going from Independence from Japan through the economic growth period to now while historical consideration of the Wall's historicity nesting at Gwangju's center is thoroughly neglected. As its residents' living standard improves, however, together with an increase in their expectation for mental, cultural affluence, their interest in urban environment encompassing them also gets higher. Coupled with growing voice against the ugly sprawling of the city due to careless urban development, alternatives begin to be explored to secure not only functional convenience but also sustainable urban development or growth management policies that assure quality of urban life. Pursuant to such a paradigm shift in urban development, as critical perception of existing cities spread, the City of Gwangju had interest in eco-friendly, pleasant urban plans, and presented various kinds of urban revitalization plans that would highlight its urban spatial features and secure its identity, and as a result, Gwangju-folly project was prosecuted. The project was kind of small-scale functional urban public edifice interlinked to its historical interest in the stylobate & walls of Gwangju Town Wall excavated during construction of National Asia Culture Center in 2007 and to its urban plan. Gwangju Town Wall generally known to have disappeared since Japanese Occupation Period, in fact, has left its traces, though faint, through the shapes of the city formed around its urban center, through which traces, 10 out of 11 polis designed by Gwangju-folly project were located at sites related to the remains of Gwangju Town Wall to revive historicity of the city. Currently, Gwangju-folly project, however, gets lots of criticism for eating up the City's budget because it became edifices merely occupying the space of Gwangju Town Wall, not considering its foundations, most of which are now used for commercial purposes. In this light, this study makes the following suggestions on how to re-express the historical space of the Wall. First, civil participation should be enlarged through public-private partnership. Second, connected programs should be developed. Third, programs should be prosecuted from a long-term, comprehensive perspective. Fourth, Gwangju-folly project should bear social character. Fifth, designs that will realize unity among polis should be made. Sixth, connectivity to its neighboring space should be enlarged through location selection reflecting Gwangju's historicity connected to public design.
