Human enteropathogenic viruses primarily infect the intestinal tract and are one of the major causes of acute gastroenteritis worldwide. However, there are no effective antiviral chemotherapeutic agents or vaccines. Probiotics have been defined as viable microorganisms that have a beneficial effect in the prevention or treatment of specific pathological conditions. The use of probiotics to enhance intestinal health has been proposed for many years. Thus, in the present study, we evaluated the antiviral activities of probiotic isolates against enteric viruses such as rotavirus A, adenovirus 40, coxsackievirus B3 (CVB3), and Enteric Cytopathic Human Orphan virus 30 (echovirus 30). The antiviral activities of probiotics isolated from Koreans were investigated against enteropathogenic viruses by using plaque-reduction assays and real-time quantitative PCR (qRT-PCR). Plaque-reduction assays showed that Lactobacillus ruminis SPM0211 and Bifidobacterium adolescentis SPM1608 had strong inhibitory effects against rotavirus and echovirus 30, respectively. Additionally, qRT-PCR assay showed that Bifidobacterium longum SPM1207 and B. adolescentis SPM1605 had the greatest inhibitory effects against adenovirus and coxsackievirus, respectively. These findings suggest that probiotic supplements containing L. ruminis SPM0211, B. longum SPM1207, B. adolescentis SPM1608, and B. adolescentis SPM1605 may be useful for the treatment or prevention of viral disease by these enteropathogenic viruses.
