The purpose of this study was to examine mothers’ recognition about the effects of smart phone usage on social development of young children. To achieve the purpose, the research questions are established as follows. First, what is the smart phone usage of young children like at home? Second, What is mother's recognition about social development according to mother's background variable? Third, what is the relation between smart phone usage of young children and sociality development? The subjects of this study were 300 mothers who her children going to national and public child care center in K borough of Seoul Metropolitan City. For the study tool, the questionnaires on mother's perceptions of their preschool children’s smart phone use that had been used in the studies by Lee, Won-Seok and Sung, Young-Hwa(2012) were modified and supplemented to be used. For the measurement tool for the Social development of young children, the study employed a younger children's sociality development rating scale that was restructured by Kim, Suk-Gyeong(1988) through modification and addition attuned to the reality of Korea based on a social maturity test by Vineland(1997) and a social ability test by Jiao and Ji(1986). SPSS-WIN 21.0 was used for the data analysis to calculate the average and frequency analysis and one way ANOVA, Scheffe's post-test, correlation analysis(Pearson correlation), Multiple Regression Analysis were also conducted. The results of this study are summarized as followings: First, young children usually used the smart phone under their parents guidance 10∼30 minutes 1∼3 times a week, especially on weekend at home, most of the mothers responded the smart phone was unnecessary. And, they responded that their children did not need smart phone. And, the reason why young children used smart phone was because of fun, they enjoyed the fairy tales movies, animation films, online games. Second, for mothers’ recognition of the social development according to mother's background variable, there showed much difference according to ‘independence’ except for ‘cooperation’. In a ‘independence’, under 30 years old mothers are high more than over 46 years old mothers. Third, the result about examining the effects of smart phone usage on social development of young children did not show statistically significant difference. In conclusion, although the results about examining the effects of smart phone usage on social development of young children did not show statistically significant difference, the necessity is desirable for adjustment and right direction smart phone usage of young children according to mothers’ recognition on the influence that will have upon development by social development. For young children’s right use of smart phone, right guidance needs to be made for young children.
