In this study, evaluated was the health risk by measuring and analyzing the concentration of VOCs in the air around the industrial complex of Yeosu area in Jeonnam from June, 2013 to June, 2014 and the concentration of metabolites in the biopsied specimen of 671 local residents. The results are as follows: 1. The average concentration of VOCs in the air was 1.53ppb for benzene, 0.73ppb for toluene, 0.22ppb for ethylbenzene, 0.52ppb for xylene and 0.12ppb for styrene. The concentration of benzene was somewhat higher than the year-average standard (5㎍/㎥, about 1.5ppb) of the domestic air-environment newly established from 2010. 2. The concentration of VOCs in the air of the exposed and control areas showed that the concentration of all the substances was higher in the exposed area than in the control area, and the results of benzene, ethylbenzene, and xylene were statistically significant (p<0.01). 3. The results for seasonal variation of the concentration showed that the concentration in winter was the highest (2.73ppb for benzene, 0.27ppb for ethylbenzene, 0.70ppb for xylene), and the concentration in summer the lowest (0.49ppb for benzene, 0.18ppb for ethylbenzene, 0.27ppb for xylene). The concentration of toluene and xylene (0.76ppb, 0.70ppb, respectively) was also higher in winter than in other seasons, and the difference was statistically significant (p<0.05). 4. The metabolic concentration of VOCs in the urine of the entire targets was analyzed at 47.76µg/g cr., 213.07mg/g cr., and 290.09µg/g cr. for t,t-MA, HA, and MA, respectively. Compared with the average values of Korea presented in the first basic survey of national environmental conservation (49.8µg/g cr. for t,t-MA, 0.17g/g cr. for HA, and 0.26mg/g cr. for MA), the metabolic concentrations of HA and MA in the urine were higher than the average values of Korea. 5. The concentrations of t.t-MA in the urine of the residents in the exposed and control areas were 49.82µg/g cr. and 41.83µg/g cr., respectively. The concentration of HA in the urine of the exposed group (218.13mg/g cr.) was higher than that in the urine of the control group (197.86mg/g cr.). The concentration of MA in the urine of the exposed group (303.16µg/g cr.) was also higher than that in the urine of the control group (252.32µg/g cr.), and the difference was statistically significant (p<0.001). 6. As for the effect of smoking, the concentrations of HA in the urine of non-smokers of the exposed and control groups were 184.74mg/g cr. and 240.48mg/g cr., respectively, and the control group showed a higher concentration than the exposed group (p<0.05). However, the concentrations of MA in the urine of both smokers and non-smokers in the exposed group (307.43㎍/g cr. and 304.38㎍/g cr., respectively) were higher than those in the control group (221.92㎍/g cr. and 258.59㎍/g cr., respectively), and the difference was statistically significant (p1∼3km (298.77㎍/g cr.)>above 3km (266.96㎍/g cr.), indicating that the shorter the distance between the residence and the industrial complex, the higher the concentration. The differences were statistically significant (p<0.05). 8. The results of risk evaluation through CTE, RME, and probabilistic analysis of benzene, a carcinogen showed that they exceeded the allowed risk (10-6) except for some values of the control area. The risk index of toluene, a non-carcinogen, did not exceed ‘1’ in both the single estimation analysis and the probabilistic analysis. In order to decrease the human body risk of target-area residents due to environmental exposure, it is judged necessary to establish the control and reduction measures of harmful substance emission.
