The developments in the automobile industry in the 20th century brought huge changes and improvements in human lives; however, with the rising concerns about global warming and other environmental issues, greenhouse gas reduction by enhancing automobile fuel efficiency is urgent. To meet such demand, researches are under way on a number of materials that could lighten vehicles. One such material is the Carbon-Fiber-Reinforced composite material. Such material has been applied of late in various fields, such as for car bodies, parts, and components. As such, the demand for such material is on the rise. The Carbon-Fiber-Reinforced materials applied to vehicles improve the braking, steering, durability, and fuel efficiency by reducing the vehicle weight; thus, they can save energy and minimize the CO2 emissions. Therefore, in this study, such composite materials were applied to vehicle seat frames to reduce the vehicle weights while achieving optimal stability.
Among the most important elements of a vehicle, the vehicle seats must be rigid and strong not only enough to provide comforts to the passengers by absorbing the impacts and vibrations that occur while a vehicle is running, but also to guarantee the safety of the passengers. The current seat structure materials are mainly of steel structures, which offer excellent strength but are disadvantageous in terms of vehicle weight reduction. To apply the composite materials to such seat frame, the following components of the vehicle seat frame were separately designed: the back support, the seat panel fixture, and the seat panel lower frame. Further, structural and fatigue analyses were conducted on the materials (CFRP, GFRP, Steel, Al7075, and Al6061), according to Chrysler’s safety standards. The static analysis of the study results presented safety factors lower than 3 in all the materials, which were considered inappropriate. The static analysis of proposal 1 revealed that CFRP, Al7075, and Steel had safety factors higher than 3. Among them, the CFRP showed the highest safety factor (greater than about 4). The static analysis of proposal 2, on the other hand, presented excellent safety factors (higher than 15) for CFRP, GFRP, Al7075, and Steel. In the case of proposal 3, all the materials presented safety factors lower than 3, which were considered inappropriate; for proposal 4, CFRP, Al7075, Steel, and GFRP presented excellent safety factors (higher than 15); and for proposal 5, all the materials secured high safety factors (more than 15). The fatigue analysis proved that CFRP has the highest safety factor (greater than about 6.5); thus, it was confirmed that CFRP is the most excellent material. For the actual application of CFRP to vehicle seat frames; however, its price, machinability, and other characteristics should be considered.
