The Transitional Characteristics of Landscape & Attractions in Seoul, through analysis of the Landscape associated Texts원문보기

Seoul has recently been reinforcing its nature as a historical and tourist city. The core resources to put together those two aspects are landscapes and attractions. There are two tendencies to dominate the urban landscape images of people: one includes the representative landscapes as visual landmarks, and the other does favorite attractions of people. Calling them landscapes·attractions, this study chose them as the major subjects. It is true that landscapes·attractions do exist, but they are basically the products of perception since their existence comes into effect by people's choices.
Representative landscapes refer to object landscapes usually seen outside, and attractions refer to particular places enjoyed through experiences within an area. Both of them are common objects that many people perceive to be ideal, which was why the present study set out to define attractions expressed by the mass media as landscape ·attractions and examine their changing patterns by the periods, thus shedding light onto the identity of Seoul landscapes.
There have been many structural and quantitative researches on landscapes and attractions, and it is now needed to understand why and how they are considered attractive for more specific landscape resource management, which is a phenomenological approach toward landscape analysis and can be examined by looking into the content mentioned by mass media published contemporarily.
In an effort to identify the images of Seoul and their changing patterns by the periods, the present study set out to investigate representative landscapes and landscape·attractions in the perceptions of residents from Joseon to the present. The study compared Joseon, which is called the archetype of Seoul, with the Japanese rule, when its modernization began, in terms of landscape·attractions through mass media to understand people's perceptions those days, thus figuring out their changing patterns and also landscape continuity and changes until the present.
The study compared and analyzed Joseon, Japanese rule, and the present diachronically based on the periodic characteristics and mass media materials. It examined landscapes·attractions with continuity in the physical, life and activity, and value and meaning aspects to ensure research consistency, thus identifying the place characteristics of landscape·attractions in Seoul. It analyzed the distribution, typography, appearance, and view of landscape ·attractions in the physical aspect, sightseeing, leisure cultural activities, and group activities in the life and activity aspect, and historical, literary, and social cultural meanings in the value and meaning aspect. The specific findings were as follows:
First, there were changes to the perceptions of landscape ·attractions as the urban areas expanded. They formed, shared, and used a variety of view points including the Nujeong culture to appreciate beautiful natural landscapes such as the mountains and rivers during Joseon. Natural landscapes were replaced with modern commercial streets and recreational facilities during the Japanese rule under the influence of modernization. As city parts were introduced, the perception level of landscape resources formed by landscaping rose. After Liberation, the expansion of American-style grid-type cities weakened centrality and directionality. Entering the modern times, people's view preference for natural landscapes increased once again as the reckless developments damaged natural landscapes. As the residential districts were much concentrated in Gangnam, attractions tended to concentrate in the historic landscapes around the original downtowns in Gangbuk, which is because modern urban tourism prefers historicity beyond daily reality. Natural, historical, and life landscape resources especially including urban villages and alleys have continued to hold perceptual importance since Joseon. Newly emerging were downtown commercial districts. The area around Hongik University and Garosugil belonged to the same category of complex cultural streets, which points to the diversification of types of landscape·attractions.
Second, the perceptions of landscapes·attractions also changed according to the changes to urban life. Entering the early modern and modern times, people had easier access to landscape·attractions thanks to the development of transportation and technology with the rising number of experiential attractions rather than prospective landscapes. Activities at attractions also changed to have citizen-centric nature, which has placed importance on the daily visions and experiences of common people. The types of experiences have also become diverse with importance placed on various food cultures and artistic and historic experiences.
Finally, the landscapes of Seoul are the results of different periodic styles being accumulated and infused from Joseon to the present, thus presenting their own unique charms. The preference for a broad open prospective view structure has been maintained with partial preference for hidden landscapes such as alleys. The perspectives of attractions have gradually expanded from the dot dimension through the line and side dimension to the spatial and microscopic dimension. In addition, the places where people perceive attractions have also become diverse including natural, cultural, residential, commercial, modern, and vernacular. There is a need to actively preserve landscapes·attractions of various periods and types and ensure the harmonious coexistence of public spaces including the streets, parks, and plazas. It is especially required to create a variety of pedestrian-centric history and culture trails for the continuous experience of those diverse landscape·attractions resources.
