This study aimed to examine the latest movie by director Jia Zhang Ke(?樟柯)entitled ‘A Touch of Sin’(2013). Within China, this work has not been researched much on. In this regard, the researcher deemed it wise to embark on delving deeply into this piece of art. Among his works, this movie gave a serious shock and its sense of degree of completeness reflected on the modern Chinese society. What were the reasons for shooting this movie and what were the things reflected upon were the main goals of this research. In the process of examining this work in details, ‘A Touch of Sin’ revealed an analysis of anarrative, character, conflicting human relations, visual style, space, props and animals. Four episodes in the movie were focused on including a rich, village chief accusing the miner Dahai(大海),Zhousan(周三) committing murder and indulgence in robbery,Xiaoyu (小玉)of having an affair with a married man, and a young man namedXiaohui(小?. who wanted to maintain his family’s livelihood. Deeper analysis of these episodes revealed the personality and image of each character. Not only that, a conflicting human character of each protagonist was also disclosed through an analysis of the final violent acts which, if examined more closely showed one problem in modern Chinese society. Through a visual style analysis, certain representations of places in China can be observed: wide gap between the rich and the poor in Shanxi province, irrational family relations among families, siblings, and couples in Chongqing, the problem of keeping the dignity of women belonging to the underprivileged class in Hebei province, and the chaotic gambling areas and the frequent suicides of laborers due to their miserable conditions in Guangdong. In terms of their props, it can be observed that they were all used in the mentioned four episodes. Moreover, symbols of animals such as horse, duck, snake, and goldfish in the movie provided a clue to a further understanding of things the movie wanted to imply and convey. Viewed as a whole,Jia zhang ke(?樟柯) arranged the movie in three perspectives. First, he seemed to present the north to south aspect as shown from Shanxi(山西), Chongqing(重?, Hubei(湖北), to Guangdong (??.Second, the rule for sequencing the age group from the youngest to the oldest as can be seen in how he showed the following: 60-year oldDahai(大海), 70-year old Zhousan(周三), 80-year oldXiaoyu(小玉), and 90?year oldXiaohui(小?. Interestingly, the occupations these protagonists have also revealed the primary ‘four generation’of labor still Chinese people are involved in. Finally, he seemed to present a time sequence. The four episodes are shown during the Lunar New Year’s Day. Thisis where he seemed to start to portray modern China to be in. Moreover, the violence seen in the movie appeared to be coincidental but from there and then, he implied that such violence is universal and not exclusive in China alone.
