As a promising hybrid energy storage system, lithium ion capacitors (LICs) have been intensively investigated regarding their practical use in various applications, ranging from portable electronics to grid support. The asymmetric LIC offers high-energy and high-power densities compared with conventional energy storage systems such as electrochemical double-layer capacitors (EDLCs) and lithium ion batteries (LIBs). To enable proper operation of the LIC, the negative electrode should be pre-lithiated (pre-doped) prior to cell operation, which is regarded as a key technology for developing self-sustainable LICs. In the conventional pre-doping process, however, the safety issue still remains a drawback for lithium ion capacitors, arising from the use of metallic lithium. Herein, a new pre-doping method has been proposed by utilization of stable lithium transition metal oxides as an alternative Li+ source. The use of lithium transition metal oxide simplifies the Li+ pre-doping process and meets the stringent safety requirements for use of LICs. For the proposed pre-doping method, the potential use of Li2MoO3, Li5FeO4, and Li6CoO4 have also been demonstrated. These materials exhibited that a large amount of Li+ can be electrochemically extracted from the structure incorporated into the positive electrode via a highly irreversible process. Most of the extracted Li+ is available for pre-doping of the negative electrode during the first charge. Nevertheless, in case of Li2MoO3, partial reversibility of 30% enhances energy density of the LIC. In this regard, highly reversible Li2RuO3, as a functional additive for further increase of energy density, was additionally incorporated into the PE with Li2MoO3. In contrast, Li5FeO4 and Li6CoO4 showed the feasibility of high power LICs by reducing the amount of addition into the PE. These intriguing electrochemical behaviors of the materials are suitable for not only providing sufficient Li+ to the negative electrode but also obtaining high energy and high power of LICs. To obtain fundamental understandings of these systems, electrochemical behaviors and structural stabilities of the materials are thoroughly investigated by means of electrochemical experiments and theoretical validation based on first principles calculations.
