Preparation and Applications of Multifunctional Mesoporous Materials
In materials chemistry, the importance of mesoporous materials has been going on rise. With uniform mesopores and high surface areas, mesoporous materials are applied in many advanced applications such as catalysis, intracellular drug/protein delivery, carbon dioxide capture, hydrogen/methane storage, sensory system, photovoltaics, fuel cell and nanoparticle synthesis.
In this thesis, we have three things to develop; a simple method to synthesize new multifunctional mesoporous silica materials, a strategic design to synthesize and analyze new nanomaterials, and a method of synthesizing and applying functional high-tech nanomaterials.
First, we successfully synthesized bimodal mesoporous silicas having two different regimes of pore dimensions using cetyltrimethylammonium hydroxide ionic template and nonionic surfactants such as Brij-30, Brij-52, Brij-72, and Brij-76. Based on this approach, we successfully controlled surface area and secondary pore dimension.
The lotus-root shaped meso-/macroporous TiO2 was synthesized in the presence of cetyltrimethylammonium hydroxide template. The lotus-root shaped meso-/macroporous TiO2 exhibited high surface area due to the well-defined mesopores and macropores. The coexistence of anatase and rutile phases was confirmed by PXRD. Dye-sensitized solar cells with lotus-root shaped meso-/macroporous TiO2 and nanoparticulate P25 photoanode showed enhanced efficiency than the cell with nanoparticulate P25 photoanode.
Graphene oxide (GO)-embedded sol-gel films were prepared as a substrate for surface-assisted laser desorption/ionization (SALDI) mass spectrometry. The graphene oxide (GO)-embedded sol-gel films were analyzed by SEM, AFM, and PXRD. The graphene oxide (GO)-embedded sol-gel films were good SALDI matrix for low background metabolite fingerprinting.
Mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) with a radial pore geometry and cubic MCM-48 of well-known Pm3n symmetry were synthesized and subsequently etched using Ca(NO3)2 to expand their mesopores. Various methods, such as PXRD, TEM, and electron tomography identified unique 3-demensional structures of pore-enlarged MSNs. Moreover, their surfaces could be functionalized with cell-penetrating octaarginine-based peptide through Click reaction. Intracellular delivery of functional protein such as Cre recombinase into human TE671 cells was investigated. Pore-enlarged MSNs were very good protein delivery carriers.
As a simple but very effective method, the direct carbonization process with as-prepared MSN containing cetylpyridinium bromide template, led to high surface N-doped microporous carbon nanosphere (MCN) with 4.20% of N atoms. The N-doped MCN material sorbed CO2 with high isosteric heat of adsorption value of 58.4 kJ mol-1. The presence of N atoms and optimal microporosity led to a new good sorbent material for CO2 sorption.
Finally, Pd-NP/polythiophene nanospheres in which palladium nanoparticles (NP) with a size of 120-200 nm uniformly coated on polythiophene nanosperes were prepared using 2-thiophenemethanol as a sole reducing agent. TEM, STEM, SEM, PXRD, and XPS were used to analyze the characteristics of Pd-NP/polythiophene nanopheres. Pd-NP/polythiophene nanospheres are a good catalyst for the Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling under aerobic condition.
