The present study is based on a survey on 300 female Jecheon residents with curly hair and in 10’s to 50’s. The survey was carried out from October 2014 to March 2015. 298 responses were collected (99.3% response rate). Hair samples were collected from selective respondents (6 in 10’s to 20’s, 7 in 30’s to 40’s and 7 in 50’s) with a healthy hair and the responses were analyzed.
For the type of the curl, majority of the respondents had partly curly hair, while the thickness was normal. Regarding the scalp condition, majority had neutral skin, and oily and parched skins followed. As for the efforts to handle curly hairs, taking massage was the solution for the majority (82.1%) and medicines (17.9%) followed. Regarding the reason of curly hair, majority of the respondents (82.9%) thought it is down to nature. Respondents who thought the curly hair is acquired were turned to believe that stress and climacteric changes have decisive effects on curly hair. Differences between age groups are significant in hair condition, thickness, bushiness and scalp condition.
Respondents in 10’s and 20’s selected ‘magic straightening perm’ to straighten their curly hair, while 40.4% of respondents in 30’s and 40’s selected ‘magic straightening perm’ and 35.4% selected ‘perm treatment’. 47.1% of those in 50’s chose ‘perm’ (=103.191, p<.001). There’s no meaningful difference between age groups regarding the amount of stress from having curly hair (=19.498, p<.01). To lessen the curl, 82.1% took a massage, and the rest used medicines. Regarding the satisfaction with thermal perm treatment, there was a significant difference among age groups. The satisfaction was relatively high in respondents in 10’s and 20’s (54.6%) and 30’s and 40’s (46.5%). It is interesting that respondents in 40’s or younger age is likely to have higher satisfaction to thermal perm treatment comparing to those in 50’s or elder age (=39.107, p<.001).
By applying thermal perm agent to curly hairs, the extent of damage on hair was investigated through hair thickness, changes in surface, hair tensile strength and elongation. The thermal perm effect on the tensile strength was significant in hair samples taken from respondents in 10’s and 20’s. The strength was reduced by 40.83 on average; after the treatment the strength was reduced to 95.17 from 136.00 (t=9.547, p<.001). However, elongation in all age groups and tensile strength in certain age groups (30’s to 40’s and 50’s or elder age) were not significant. Tensile strength of the hair samples taken from respondents in 10’s and 20’s decreased at the level of significance without any damages. The visible damage on the surface was shown to increase with increasing ages before treatment. The surface of the curly hair in strong curls or in 50’s showed, even though partly, symptoms of partitioning, scale separation, movement and rising, After the perm treatment (flatting), The morphology of cuticles get evenly spaced out and regularly overlapped with the decreasing ages. The results indicate that perm treatment demonstrated a nice hair style, but need to minimize the damages from any curl hair treatments with changing agents or the mixing ratio. The present study is meaningful in that the hypothesis was investigated through analyzing the thermal perm effects on curly hairs.
