Mass culture can be defined as a culture consumed by people who are formed by mass media, such as television, radio, and print. It also refers to the popular culture enjoyed by the general public in their daily lives. Likewise, as the society progresses into the modern era, interest in and consumption of culture increased, especially when the opportunity to experience foreign culture increased. Many changes, such as society being ruled by soft power, have occurred in modern society. Furthermore, a large amount of information is spreading quickly with the arrival of a new consumption environment that overcomes time and space restrictions due to the introduction of the Internet and smart-phones in addition to the traditional media, such as television and radio broadcasts. For example, as a music video by a Korean singer is introduced on Youtube, a website that features videos, people around the world become enthusiastic about it, and even a new phenomenon called flash mobs around the world is promoted. Recently, following the development of new media and changes in cultural trends, the rate of cultural diffusion is accelerated, and cultural tours are becoming a new trend in the cultural tourism industry. Because of increasing in needs to visit specific places seen on media, new forms of tourism, such as Film Tourism, Celebrity Tourism, and Cultural Tourism were created. That is, the behavior of media audiences turns themselves into tourism consumers. Accordingly, when audiences are exposed to media, their degrees of participation in the cultures of foreign countries they encountered through media increase, thus, encouraging them to visit the country. It is very important to understand the psychological structure that changes these media audiences into tourism consumers. Therefore, the purpose of the current study was to investigate the influence of the Hallyu videos on the decision-making process on the Hallyu tourism. A research model was proposed using the AIDA(Attention-Interest-Desire-Action) model which effectively explains human behavior from media exposure to consumption behavior. This study conducted research to chinese people who experienced watching Hallyu videos since China is the most significantly influenced country by the Hallyu, and is also a major inbound market for South Korea. The main results are as follows. First, the most watched videos by the Hallyu video audiences were Korean dramas. Moreover, Korean dramas were found to be the most favored among Korean culture experiences as well as the most favored segment of the Korean culture. That is, for the Chinese, the Hallyu was mostly formed via Korean dramas, and it could be interpreted that they experienced Korean culture indirectly through Korean dramas. Second, it was found that the behavior of paying attention to the Hallyu videos increased interest in the aforementioned videos, that is, it encouraged participation in the Hallyu videos as well, and it also influenced the interest in the Korean culture exposed in the Hallyu videos. The results support the effect of media utilization: that is, the theory of uses and gratifications. Third, the interest formed by the effect of media influenced the desire to visit Korea. Specifically, it was found that the increased degrees of participation in the Hallyu videos and cultural interest in general had a positive effect on the desire to visit Korea. Fourth, it was found that the desire to visit Korea influenced intention to visit Korea. The desire to visit Korea was found to mediate between the interest formed by the media effect and tourism behavior. Consequently, it is suggested that the final action will be made through ‘desire’, a psychological response, rather than directly affecting the final action when the interest is formed by the use of media. Lastly, an analysis of the structural model of the current study confirmed that the model, which is based on the AIDA model suggested by Lewis (1900), is appropriate in explaining the decision-making process of the Hallyu tourists. The model is likewise applicable in predicting and understanding the behavior of media audiences from various angles by measuring media effects and tourism behaviors. Therefore, the present study found that the attention paid to the Hallyu videos exposed in the media formed the Hallyu tourism behavior that eventually generated interests in the Hallyu and Korean culture, which would, in turn, create the consequent desire and intention to visit Korea. Thus, to strengthen national soft power through Hallyu broadcasting and tourism industries should work in tandem to develop contents that can activate Hallyu tourism and create Hallyu policies to support such form of tourism.
