The technological development has expanded communication space into the virtual space, escaping from printed matters such as newspaper, magazine and wave-based medium such as TV and radio etc., and as the new media environment, in other words, Web 2.0 has brought up ‘Social Media’ based on the network therefore users can create contents simply and provides functions to share their contents with others easily. The appearance of social media whose features are participation, share and open, changes the method of acquisition of new information and lifestyles of modern people. Especially, with the distribution of smart phones, connection to network and creation of contents are available anytime and anywhere. The creation and distribution of information through social media has come to be available in real-time. Through this, users came to have more information so fast and easily compare to the existing media and the scope of cultural experience and knowledge has been expanded. According to the changes of communication environment, the relevant organizations in the performing arts world have opened their own accounts and are making efforts to have effective communication with customers. The regular utilization of social media by domestic performing arts world starts after 2010, when the smart phone was introduced to Korea. In the beginning, blog was used mostly. Later, the organizations have expanded their platforms into Twitter and Facebook etc. Recently, multi-media specialized platforms such as Youtube and Flickr have become one of the platforms the organizations of performing arts use. The method of contents has also changed. In the early days, information was simply delivered. However, now there are many kinds of information available such as behind-scenes stories or hidden stories of the performance etc. Although many organizations have opened accounts of social media, they have not been actively involved in or keep using as a simple tool of delivering information so there is more space for organizations of domestic performing arts world in utilization of social media. Especially, the entertainment – type contents and features of social media, that are sensitive to social issues, are distracting the attention of contents of pure performing arts so it has not been able to obtain big effects in increasing the social interest regarding the performing arts world. In case of NTOK, the NTOK has opened early the account of social media, has been creating contents constantly through various platforms and has gained positive evaluation in the field of social media marketing in Korea. The NTOK is the only public producing theatres aiming at creating of new contemporary arts based on the traditional round type contents. New repertories are made annually and NTOK leads to provide quality contents in the domestic performing arts world. NTOK has laid emphasis on PR strategies so that NTOK can enable new contents of performing arts with the public, conducting the role of public theater with the space for sharing new contents of contemporary performing arts. Especially, NTOK put emphasis on communication with the nation as a public theater and NTOK has paid attention to social media enabling direct communication with the audience. Currently, NTOK has made ‘NTONGI’ the social media character of NTOK and currently implements social marketing on blog, Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, Kakao story etc. And also, the personnel exclusively for social marketing manages to contents constantly utilizing the features of each platform in the department of public relation. Like out NTOK, the NT of Unite Kingdom, making new contemporary plays based on its own traditional original contents, has limits that their contents are original contents or new contents as NTOK has the same limits. However, the development of contents, activation of communication, and issue-making project are more smoothly implemented rather than our NTOK. NT also started early the social media marketing. Now NT has Twitter, Facebook, Youtube, Tumbler, Pod cast, Live TV etc., in other worlds, NT operates seven kinds of social media. Each platform has been established for interactive synergy organically and has tried to effective communication, laying stress on Twitter. Especially, NT has developed multimedia contents into various types and these contents have become references to NTOK, which do not have sufficient experiences in social marketing. NT overcomes the disadvantages in PR in terms of traditional original and new works through making various issues and developed contents. These efforts seem to contribute to increasing knowledge of consumers and leading to actual consumption of performing arts by delivering the attractions of the new original traditional works. Communication will be delivered more rapidly based on the network of virtual space and the more and more information will be distributed much faster. According to this, the competitiveness increasing consumers’ attention and making online relation with the consumers will become fiercer. The performing arts world, especially the pure performing arts world should pay attention to more active communication with customers through social media in order to connect to actual consumption by making the consumers get interested and have customers own tastes in the performing arts world. The effective social marketing strategy for performing arts world under the communication environment of which marketing becomes more important has been researched in this paper. Through comparison and analysis with NT which has been actively involved in activities of developing audience through social media and NTOK which has been evaluated positively in social marketing activities, the implication on how to use social media for our performing arts world have been withdrawn in this paper. Despite that many performing arts organizations use social media channel, their activities and achievements are inadequate. They just keep making channels and provide information only. Therefore, it seems that the improvement of utilization strategies seem urgent. As a basic material in establishing social media marketing strategies for performing arts organizations in Korea, I expect that this research can suggest fundamentally new direction of social media marketing.
