This study aims to look into animation in the equal position as various individual styles of art used in art therapy in the present and the usefulness of an integrated art therapy program utilizing it and the effect on the improvement of adolescents’ self-esteem. Art therapy helps individuals experience physical and mental balance and emotional healing in the process of understanding and externalizing various psychological problems they experience while they do a creative act with art for the purpose of treatment. In recent years, art therapy is actively accepting the intimately connection with a number of integrated theory and styles of art beyond the boundary between media to increase its therapeutic effect. Intermodal approach of using art by converting or overlapping one art form with another art form strengthens the function of the mode of expression used formerly while it increases the range of expressions and imagination to help maximize the effectiveness of treatment. In short, to deepen self-exploring, choosing media and materials appropriate for the client has a significant meaning and action. Like this, today’s art therapy induces personal positive growth and change through an integrated use of various artistic modes of expression such as drawing, writing, movement, sound and improvisational drama. The mode of expression of animation has a unique art form that is not bound by a single medium or technique and that the production process itself already includes the properties of a composite form. Because of these characteristics, animation is a medium very suitable for a use as a psychotherapy program with an integrated approach. Besides, animation is a visual medium very familiar and highly preferred by most children and adolescents who are familiar with the digital media environment. Therefore, approach using animation minimizes a resistance to media, enables children and adolescents to voluntarily participate in therapeutic activities as compared to the existing art therapy and consequently, form a positive therapeutic relationship. For the development and application of art therapy program utilizing animation, a preliminary study was conducted with a Counselling Psychology Center for Adolescents with a goal of improving self-esteem. Self-esteem is an important psychological factor has a great impact on mental health during the adolescent period, so high self-esteem helps adolescents lower risk factors such as depression or anxiety, interpersonal relationships and school maladjustment. Thus, how individuals use self-esteem may act as a protective factor or a risk factor for life. In order to verify the effectiveness of the animation therapy program completed through the stage of preliminary study, this study conducted a qualitative study and a statistical analysis using self-esteem scale with ‘adolescents in a group with a high risk of the Internet game addiction’ and ‘adolescents in a group with a high risk of suicidal impulse’ with the single group repeated measurement method by case. All adolescents in the two groups had numerous intrinsic problems such as serious emotional problems, low self-esteem, weak family support and reverse function family. The contents of the program were designed for the participants to understand their present situations and problems, strengthen their positive resources through exploring themselves and increase their self-esteem, by each session, and after the program, there was a significant change of an increase in the index of their self-esteem in both groups, which verified the effectiveness of the program. To look into the results of this study, first, complex and close connections between modes of expression and techniques, the characteristics of the medium, animation, had effects on promoting the therapeutic value, providing opportunities for clients to their inner space in various and rich ways. Second, the program was so effective that, as the participants became creators in the activity of producing an animation and were completely immersed in the process of creating characters and making motions, they freely vented their feelings and released emotional stress. Third, in that it is a medium with which adolescents have high familiarity and preference, it was found that animation has a lower resistance to the tools and materials as compared to other existing media in art therapy, so it can improve the positive therapeutic relationship. Empirical research on animation therapy is still in an early stage. However, with the preceding studies discussed above, hopefully, new integrated art therapy using animation can lead to subsequent research development with experiments of therapeutic approach and positive results of research conducted by the researcher for the past years. Furthermore, it is expected that animation will be actively utilized as a useful technique of art therapy by exhibiting flexibility as another way out of expression for art therapists or related experts in various fields.
