The present study is a case analysis of mother-child art therapy for a borderline intellectual child. Its subjects were a male 4th grade elementary school student and his mother who lived in A city. His K-WISC-IV intelligence score was 77, which belongs to the borderline category. A total of 13 sessions of mother-child art therapy were carried out twice a week from April 9 through May 14, 2015. The data were analyzed qualitatively to determine the problematic behaviors of the borderline intellectual child, the factors causing the problematic behaviors, the therapeutic factors influencing his changes, and the effects of mother-child art therapy, using Miles & Huberman's matrix and network. Pre-and post-evaluation were made of the Korea child behavior checklist (CBCL)/ 6-18, a house-tree-person (HTP) drawing test and a kinetic family drawing (KFD) test as auxiliary assessment instruments. The results of this study were as follows. First, the child avoided approach with negative feelings towards other family members, and bit his finger nails without expressing his feelings frankly. Second, his problematic behaviors were caused by his parents' dysfunctional upbringing attitudes, dysfunctional communication, and marital conflicts. Third, The child's changes were influenced by therapeutic factors: changes in his parents' upbringing attitudes, art activities, and therapists' roles. In particular, the mother-child art therapy made it possible for the mother to give an insight into herself and take receptive and positive attitudes towards the child. This change acted as a therapeutic factor for alleviating the child's symptoms. Forth, The child had expressiveness improved, anxious behaviors reduced, and self-confidence gained by art therapy. These results enable to know that the mother-child art therapy was effective for the changes in the mother's upbringing attitudes and the symptom alleviation of the borderline intellectual child.
