This study was conducted to determine the effects of dietary protein levels on nutrient digestibility and fecal characteristics in companion dogs. Three experimental dog foods with different protein levels, that is 23, 27 and 30%, respectively were produced by drying at lower temperatures. Nine female Miniature Schnauzers (4.5 years old, 6.9±0.5 kg), 9 female Miniature Poodles (4.5 years old, 4.2±0.8 kg), and 6 female Malteses (4.6 years old, 3.4±0.6 kg) were assigned to treatment diets in a randomized complete block design. So, 8 dogs per treatment, that is 3 Miniature Schnauzers, 3 Miniature Poodles and 2 Malteses. Forty-two days of feeding trial was performed and nutrient digestibility of experimental dog food, hematology and fecal characteristics were measured. Crude protein digestibility was linearly increased as dietary crude protein concentration increased (p<0.001). Among the fecal volatile fatty acids, by protein levels, concentration of propionic acid tended to be decreased (p=0.055), concentration of isovaleric acid tended to be increased (p=0.077). Fecal p-cresol concentration tended to be decreased by dietary protein levels (p=0.096). Also, to analyze changes of fecal population of bacteria, fecal samples were collected before feeding, 10 days after feeding and 20 days after feeding in 9 female Miniature Schnauzers. At phylum level, fecal bacteria was dominated by the Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, Fusobacteria, Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria and several other phyla at lower abundances. Population of Bacteroidetes was significantly different among protein concentrations 23, 30 vs. 27%, each 46, 40 vs. 17% (p<0.05). Concentration of isobutyric acid and isovaleric acid in Miniature Schnauzers linearly increased by dietary protein levels after 20 days of feeding (p<0.01, p=0.058). Concentration of isovaleric acid in Miniature Schnauzers was highest quadratic effect in 27% protein concentrations after 10 days of feeding (p=0.071). Also, fecal population of Ruminococcaceae and Lachnospiraceae displayed positive correlations with fecal n-butyric acid concentrations(r=0.41, r=0.41). Therefore, it could be concluded that different protein levels in dog foods affect the nutrient digestibility and fecal characteristics.
