While the thriller genre was weak in Korean films for a long time, it experienced a continuous advance since the year 2000. Films of the thriller genre themed on subject matter such as kidnapping, child abduction, serial murder, and rape began to receive a lot of interest from audiences and such films began to spring up across the film industry. Korean thriller films that led in the box offices were mainly male-centered revenge films. Korea, which was a new military power until the 1980s, changed through rapid economic growth and democratization. During this process, males were given focus as a method to reveal the various irrationalities in Korea of the past in which they had been the main bodies. (Jun Ho Bong, 2003), (Chan Wook Park, 2003), (Hong Jin Na, 2008), which have been judged to have led the Korean thriller genre to popularity, are all male-centered revenge films. Due to such outcomes, many films produced in the Korean film industry after the year 2000 were of the thriller genre. Because of characteristics of the genre, thriller films have a tendency to move through the story through strong physical actions centered on males. In this process, females were completely excluded and only portrayed as victims. Also, as numerous male-centered thriller films came out, audiences began to become familiar with a stimulation of the human senses such as through fear, suspense, and thrill, which are the strong points of thriller films. It seems that such conditions brought on the change in the portrayal of females who had always been expressed as victims. As females who had been expressed as average victims began to be portrayed as being active bodies, the actions of females who are physically disadvantaged became a new source of stimulation to audiences. As society changed, females began to rise in status and economic success and as divorce rates and the number of single mothers increased, a form of maternal love different from that of the past developed. Such various reasons can be seen to have caused the change in females in thriller films. After observing these phenomena, I began to do some critical thinking regarding why and how females in Korean thriller films are changing according to the times and also how their revenge has evolved. As Korean thriller films used revenge as their subject matter, they mainly used males who were physically strong and females were mainly placed as victims. However, afterwards, female-centered revenge films came out and were also successful in the box office. At this, this study attempts to discuss characteristics of the genre with regards to the cause of the change in female positions through national, social, and economic approaches. First, this study will observe how thriller films have passed and it will look into the characteristics of thriller films in Korea. Also, it attempts to discuss characteristics of the genre with regards to how females have been placed in Korean thriller films and what kind of changes this has brought on through national, social, and economic issues. In addition, it will select a Korean thriller film in which an active female is the main body and it will observe how her method of revenge has been portrayed.
