TThe Effects of Recognition Compensation Mediating in the Relationship between the Participatory Motivation of Volunteering Work and the Activity Effectiveness원문보기

Participation in volunteer activity occurs with various motivations and through paths. The number of participants in volunteer activity is on a rising trend every year. Despite the importance of volunteer work, however, the level of activity effectiveness and awareness of importance of volunteering camp counselor who plays a role of bridging volunteer’s center and volunteer worker, are very low. With this respect, the present study examined the impact of the participatory motivation of volunteering camp counselor that is a hub of volunteer activity upon activity effectiveness and verified the mediating effect of the satisfaction with recognition-compensation on activity effectiveness. By doing do, this study aimed to propose a plan to boost up the activity of volunteering camp counselor. To obtain the research objective, this study carried out an empirical test with the volunteering camp advisors working in Seocho District, Kangnam District, and Songpa District in Seoul. A total of 239 questionnaires were collected and accepted for data analysis. The results are as follows.
First, Looking at the demographic characteristics of the samples (volunteering camp advisors), most of them belong to their 50s in age; fulltime housewife in occupation; high school graduate or higher in academic background; atheist in religion; more than a year to less than 3 years in volunteering period; less than 10 hours a week in the number of hours for volunteer activity; parents plus (child)children in family composition; and 5 million won in monthly income. And for the activities performed by the volunteering camp advisors, most of the respondents said they came to know and join the role due to ‘the recommendation by family or friend who does volunteer work (path)’.
To the question why they do the job, they answered ‘to feel rewarded for helping people in need (reason)’. And most of the respondents said that ‘they have continued to do volunteer activity’. Those who stopped volunteering work explained the reason that ‘they didn’t feel rewarded from volunteer work’. For key volunteering activities, most of them laboring services (event support, cleaning, laundering, mobile bathing service, etc.). More than the majority of the respondents complained ‘the lack of manpower (the number of volunteer work)’ as difficulty for their work. Second, this study conducted a test to know if there is difference in the (sub-factors of) participatory motivation of the advisors by socio-demographic characteristic. There was statistically significant difference in the awareness of ‘self-developmental motivation’ by academic background, working period, family composition, monthly household income; in ‘representative motivation’ by age and religion; in ‘external motivation’ by sex, age, occupation, academic background, working period, working hour, family composition, and monthly household income; and in ‘recreational motivation’ by occupation and academic background. In addition, for the difference in the sub-factor of recognition-compensation by socio-demographic characteristic, it was turned out that there was statistically significant difference in ‘material recognition-compensation’ by age, occupation, academic background, religion, working period, family composition and monthly household income; in ‘emotional recognition-compensation’ by age, occupation, academic background and monthly household income; in ‘social recognition-compensation’ by age, occupation, academic background, religion, working period, family composition and monthly household income; and ‘managerial recognition-compensation’ by age, occupation, academic background, religion, volunteering camp counselor working period, family composition, and monthly household income. Furthermore, there were statistically significant differences in the sub-factors of activity effectiveness by socio-demographic characteristic: ‘immersion in activity’ by age, working period, and monthly household income; ‘satisfaction with activity’ by working period and family composition; ‘the will to continue volunteering work’ by age, occupation, religion, working hour, family composition, and monthly household income.
Third, this study conducted correlation analysis for the relationship of the participatory motivation of volunteering camp advisors, their recognition-compensation and activity effectiveness. Pearson correlation coefficients explained that they are all correlated to each other in positive way.
Fourth, multiple regression analysis was carried out to examine the mediating role of recognition-compensation in the relationship between the participatory motivation of volunteering camp counselor and activity effectiveness. First, it was turned out that participatory motivation was a predicting variable for recognition-compensation (mediating variable).
Second, it was proved that participatory motivation was a predicting variable for activity effectiveness (independent variable). Third, when participatory motivation was controlled (set constant) in regression equation, the mediating variable (recognition-compensation) turned out to be a predicting variable for activity effectiveness. Fourth, when recognition-compensation was controlled constant, participatory motivation was proved to be a predicting variable for activity effectiveness (independent variable). Here, the influence of participatory motivation (predicting variable) on participatory motivation was significant, but it got less significant in the third equation than in the second one, which indicates that the mediating effect of recognition-compensation in the relationship between participatory motivation and activity effectiveness is partial.
The findings above revealed that the participatory motivation of volunteering camp advisors has not only direct impact on activity effectiveness but also indirect impact on it through recognitioncompensation, wh
