A fundamental study of mat foundation was performed based on laboratory tests, numerical and analytical analyses. The emphasis was given on quantifying the modulus of subgrade reaction and developing the numerical and design method of mat foundation. Model-scale footing tests were conducted in order to examine the modulus of subgrade reaction for jointed weathered rock. It is shown that the rock mass discontinuity affects the subgrade reaction modulus (ks) of the rock foundation. Consequently, the discontinuity in the rock mass cause the reduction of the subgrade reaction modulus (ks) by up to approximately 60% compared with intact rocks. As a result, by taking into account the rock mass discontinuity, new modulus of subgrade reaction for weathered rock foundation was proposed. A series of numerical analysis was conducted so that special attentions were given to subgrade reaction modulus characteristics under varying conditions, such as mat width, thickness, shape, and soil and rock condition. It is shown that the modulus of subgrade reaction at both corner and edge is stiffer than that of center. As a result, the recommended modification factor of subgrade reaction modulus at relative positions on the mat foundation was proposed. Therefore, it is recommended to use up to about 200% stiffer value of ks at the corner and edge of mat, compared to the center of the mat foundation. An improved numerical method for analyzing a mat foundation that can consider mat flexibility and coupled soil springs was proposed. This numerical method was incorporated in a computer software program called YS-MAT (Yonsei Mat foundation). From the results of these researches, the new design methodology for mat foundation was proposed. The modulus of subgrade reaction considering the rock discontinuity and the non-uniform subgrade reaction modulus at the relative position in a mat were integrated in YS-MAT. A series of numerical studies were performed to examine the load-settlement behavior of mat foundation. In comparison with the results of other numerical methods and case histories, it is shown that the proposed numerical and design method can better predict the settlement behavior of mat foundation.
