Sequence가 빠를수록, Entry time는 짧을수록, Dwell time은 all fixation(ms)이 길고 all saccade(%)는 빠를수록, Hit ratio가 높을수록, Revisits는 많을수록, Revisitors는 많을수록, Average fixation이 길수록, First fixation이 빠르고 길수록, Fixation count가 많을수록 영역에 대한 관심도가 높았다고 보며 이는 곧 관심과 흥미가 많았다는 것을 뜻한다.
This study aims to research in the entrance hall visitor’s observation characteristics based on visual perception of human being and analyze its characteristics so that it is to prepare fundamental grounds on exhibition space improvements. The exhibitions including museums and art galleries have had strong points of keeping and researching items, but today its meaning is being evolved into the specific space as fostering the public’s cultural awareness. It is a basic function for the exhibitions to conduct a spatial mediating role between exhibits and viewers. The exhibitions should do roles to conserve exhibits basically and to produce right information for visitors, and the space could be able to suggest mutual communications that the visitors naturally accept the roles of exhibitions and understand the exhibits. The entrance hall is the space that could form images by greeting the visitors at first time in the exhibition. In this place, the visitors could recognize whole environments of the exhibitions and accept produced experiences. At the same time, various needs of the visitors should be applied focusing on the entrance hall. The entrance hall could imply movements of the visitors, and especially it could help visitors, who have never been to the exhibitions, go to a main exhibit hall and move to in order to follow a circulation plan, by suggesting accurate visual perception information. In the exhibitions, the visitors select paths as following their interesting depending on visual experiences on space and exhibits. The spatial and visual contacts that the visitors recognize continuously could influence to select the ways. Based on the information, this study researched landscape perception reactions by analyzing observation characteristics by the visitors’ eye tracking, which could influence to select movements in the entrance hall. In order for that, this study conducted an eye-tracking experiment that is equipment for chasing eye’s directions of the visitors from the entrance hall to the main exhibit hall, and it researched how the exhibits and space configurations could affect visual perception. Then, it certified whether the exhibitions have the visitors move to the main exhibit hall efficiently by analyzing data. Most of prior studies about visual environments analysis using the eye-tracking experiment analyzed visual perception characteristics with randomly selected still images, which have experimental limitations not to understand depth and scale of the space. As the visitors experienced the real exhibitions wearing a mobile eye tracker, this study suggests more actual spatial evaluation by researching probability and observation characteristics of search behaviors during watching exhibits. This study conducted researches to understand visual perception characteristics on visual behavior of the visitors in the entrance hall among the exhibition spaces as following contents. At first, this study researched prior studies about exhibitions and observation characteristics, and it analyzed their limitations. Then this study sought its own direction. This study selected National Institute of Biological Resources in Seogu, Incheon city as a research subject, and the entrance hall was confined for this experiment. In order to research general characteristics on circulation plan of the subject, visitors were traced and researched. Then, this study operated eye-tracking experiments by gathering people for research subjects. The result of the experiments could be summarized as follows. First, it set information signs to induce entering the main exhibit hall as a ‘target’ and analyzed searching process on the target. In the process, this study found that some research subjects recognized and followed the Target but most of the subjects moved not to entrance but to different ways although they were aware of the Target. As the subjects selected the additional ways without entrance to the main exhibit hall after recognizing the Target, this study considered that interferences such as the Target’s location, scale, or design could work. Second, this study certified visual behaviors as quantified indicators in selected 35 locations as Area of Interest. In this process, human being’s eyes contact a specific object and continuously search to make paths. Through the method, this study could find places where individual interests have been taken in the exhibition space and individual interests have been taken less than their original purposes as more specific indicators. This study could suggest spatial value by analyzing the visual information. Third, through analyzing observation characteristics, depending on ‘Interest of the Eyes Applying’, this study could find conclusions as follows. It is possible to interpret the visitors have high interests and feel interest faster and much more, as Sequence is faster, Entry time is shorter, in Dwell time all fixation (ms) is longer, saccade (%) is faster, Hit ratio is higher, Revisits is more frequent, the number of Revistiors is many more, Average fixation is longer, First fixation is faster and longer, and the number of Fixation count is more many. This study could identify a highly interested space in the entrance hall, and it could find design and location improvements including not only an entrance information sign as the Target but also whole exhibit circulation plan signs to make visitors recognize them clearly. Depending on the results, this study, researching observation characteristics as following interest of the eyes applying, is conducted to consider correlation between space and visitors as more objective information and then to find the meaning. This study has a significance to prepare a fundamental beginning by understanding consideration of visitors who are subjects of experiencing and using the space. Also, consideration of visitor’s behaviors in the exhibition space could be utilized as a basis to predict visitors’ behaviors in exhibition space and suggest preliminary plans and feedback of the view. Based on this study, visitor’s characteristics and issues could be deducted after comprehensive analysis on the entrance hall of National Institute of Biological Resources and even the main exhibit hall, and it also could be utilized for multilayer-spatial analysis of other various exhibit spaces. When psychological basis of human being and individual characteristics are analyzed together, this study considers that the data could be utilized as a correlation methodology to explain evaluation of the space itself.
