This dissertation investigates how media education affects literacy of media and critical thinking disposition among adolescents. In order to test the effects of media education along with those of media usage, I conducted survey research on a sample of middle and high school students (N=1,238) from Jul. 14th to Sep. 4th in 2014. 1. Media Uses and Literacy Regarding the interrelations between media usage and literacy, the results revealed that the uses of newspapers, books and magazines were positively correlated with technical skills, critical understanding, self-expression and participation. Television usage was negatively correlated with technical skills, critical understanding and self-expression with no statistically significant relations with participation. The uses of radio and SNS showed positive correlations with technical skills and participation and no significant relations with critical understanding and self-expression. 2. Media Uses and Critical Thinking Disposition The uses of newspapers, books and magazines had positive correlations with all of the six components of critical thinking disposition such as truth-seeking, open-mindedness, inquisitiveness, objectivity, systematicity and self-confidence. In contrast, the uses of television and smartphones were negatively correlated with all of the six components of critical thinking disposition. Radio usage showed significant positive correlations only with systematicity and self-confidence. While Internet usage showed a negative correlation with objectivity, it was not significantly correlated with the remaining five components of critical thinking disposition. The uses of SNS had no statistically significant interrelations with those six components. Overall, the uses of print media such as newspapers, books and magazines tend to enhance both media literacy and critical thinking disposition, whereas television usage tends to lessen both. Smartphone usage tends to decrease critical thinking disposition, although it positively contributed to technical skills and participation. Interestingly, the uses of Internet and SNS had little influence on critical thinking disposition. 3. Media Education and Literacy Concerning the effects of media education on media literacy, ‘media education in school’ had positive influence on all components of media literacy respectively, technical skills (β=.215), critical understanding (β=.216), self-expression(β=.291) and participation (β =.145). ‘Communicative parental mediation’ also showed similar patterns - technical skills (β=.097), critical understanding (β=.102), self-expression(β=.148) and participation (β=.190). ‘Restrictive parental mediation,’ however, did not have significant influence on them. 4. Media Education and Critical Thinking Disposition Media education in school positively affected all of the six components of critical thinking disposition ? truth-seeking (β=.170), open-mindedness (β=.178), inquisitiveness (β=.215), objectivity (β=.219), systematicity (β=.263) and self-confidence (β=.247). Similarly, communicative parental mediation positively affected inquisitiveness (β=.094), objectivity (β=.104), systematicity (β=.173) and self-confidence (β=.208), while the coefficients were not significant for truth-seeking (β=.042) and open-mindedness (β =.059) at the level of p<.05. Overall, the results imply that adolescents’ literacy of media and critical thinking disposition can be promoted by both formal education in school and conversation with parents at home. 5. Media Literacy and Critical Thinking Disposition Significant interrelations among the components constituting media literacy and critical thinking disposition were found. The correlation coefficients ranged from .483 to .120. Specifically, the correlation coefficients of the six components of critical thinking disposition with technical skills were .350 to .314, those with critical understanding, .446 to .305, those with self-expression, .387 to .263, and those with participation .228 to .120. 6. Determinants of Media Literacy and Critical Thinking Disposition In order to identify factors that influence media literacy and critical thinking disposition, hierarchical regression analyses were conducted. In the case of media literacy, SNS (β=.194) had greatest influence on it, followed by school education (β =.151), open-mindedness (β=.150), high school students (β=.134), truth-seeking (β=.129), objectivity (β=.117), communicative parental mediation (β=.087), female (β=.080) and the Internet (β=.056). In the case of critical thinking disposition, critical understanding (β=.289) had greatest influence, followed by technical skills (β=.187), self-expression (β=.125), science (β=.094), smartphones (β=-.083), books and magazines (β=.080), communicative parental mediation (β=.078), television (β=-.072), high school students (β =-.061), and school education (β=.054). In conclusion, this dissertation suggests that adolescents’ literacy of media be cultivated by both media education in school and parental education at home. Especially, media education increases critical thinking disposition; school education of media transmits knowledge and skills necessary to critical thinking, and parents stimulate motivations to it.
