Development of Music Activities Program for Improvement of Expressive Language Abilities in Children with Intellectual Disabilities원문보기

The object of this study is to develop an educational program incorporating musical activities and language learning with the purpose of improving expressive language abilities in children with intellectual disabilities.
It described relevant theoretical backgrounds for the definitions and characteristics of intellectual disabilities, and analyzes any complimentary cognitive relations between music and languages based on linguistic literature reviews and experimental data from cognitive neuroscience. And it referred to previous studies that argued for the positive effect of musical programs on improving language abilities.
In the method of study, the participants consisted of, among 4th-6th graders in elementary school, small groups (3-4 students) of children with moderate intellectual disabilities whose language abilities were equivalent to those of 4-5 years old. In the tools of study, linguistic tools were composed of 10 categories that include target words for 5-6 year old level extracted by verified linguistic test tools, and detailed goal is established in point of language development stages by area, i.e. phonetics, semantics, syntax, morphology, and pragmatics. And as musical tools, the tune of which lyrics are suitably configured with target words are selected, considering participant's preferences and cognitive characteristics such as rhythm and melody.
The result of the study designated word categories of ‘nature’, ‘animals’, ‘food’, ‘musical instruments’, ‘clothes’, ‘transportation’, ‘geometric figures’, ‘entertainment’, ‘life’, and ‘buildings’ for 10 units, and activity programs were developed for each unit with one topical tune. The program was composed of an introduction of the given musical tune, teaching points to consider, and musical objectives linked to a given lingual objective. Singing, instrument performance, bodily expressions, etc. were presented through the three stages of introduction, development and summary as teaching/learning activities progressed. Specifically, singing led the participants to express the given words with attention to breathing, vocalization, and pronunciation, whilst instrumental performance induced enhancement in social aptitude, focused attention, and physical revitalization through an orchestrated format, as well as an interactive format between melodic and rhythm instruments. As for physical expressions, bodily expression of rhythms, bodily improvisation for or imitation of the wording were used so that these could aid the students to better understand the meanings of the words and be utilized as an alternative method for communication. Viewpoint of evaluation was presented with the questions that correspond with the linguistic and musical objectives so that levels of participation, responses and achievements would be observed and recorded during the course of students’ activities.
The program developed by this study is expected to be introduced to schools and interventional practices, and be flexibly applied with emphasis of activities depending on their level of development, severity of multiple disabilities, and the specific subject groupings at a given time.
