This study aims to identify relationships between multiple intelligences and the components of mathematical abilities of mathematically gifted children. For this aim, a test for mathematical abilities was conducted to grasp multiple intelligences characteristics in mathematically gifted elementary students and analyze relationships between multiple intelligences and components of mathematical abilities. The test for research was targeted to mathematically gifted elementary students in Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education in the form of a paper-and-pencil test for multiple intelligences and test for mathematical abilities. These were analyzed by using technical statistics and quantitative research method with the t-test. According to the result of analysis, multiple intelligences of elementary school students with mathematical gift was higher than that of general students in specific sectors. The former students showed a higher level in linguistic intelligence, logical-mathematical intelligence, musical intelligence, and interpersonal intelligence than the latter students; among intelligence sectors, the biggest gap was found in logical and mathematical intelligence. Characteristics in multiple intelligences and mathematical abilities of mathematically gifted elementary students are as follows: When it came to strength and weakness in each sector regarding multiple intelligences, elementary students with mathematical gift indicated the strength in logical-mathematical intelligence and weakness in naturalist intelligence. Among components of mathematical abilities, students had the highest score in memory, followed by calculation, generalization ability, spatial ability, reasoning ability, and reversible thinking in order. However, the result of analysis above had a large overall standard deviation as well as a low correlation between multiple intelligences and components of mathematical abilities. Under these circumstances, this study assumed that each student showed different aspects regarding minor mathematical abilities with separate strength and weakness. In this sense, it was necessary to compare specific student groups for students who showed high or low scores in specific sectors in each subsidiary mathematical abilities sector. In the final research task, students who showed relatively high or low scores in specific sectors among subsidiary mathematical abilities sectors were grouped to analyze how their multiple intelligences characteristics were shown. The result of analysis indicated the following relations between multiple intelligences and components of mathematical abilities in elementary students with mathematical gift: Students with low memory ability have high bodily-kinesthetic intelligence, while those with low calculation ability have low linguistic ability. When students have low spatial ability, they show high bodily-kinesthetic intelligence. Students with low reasoning ability have low linguistic ability, whereas those with high reasoning ability have low spatial ability. When mathematically gifted elementary students have high reversible thinking ability, they show high intrapersonal intelligence; the concept of “high” and “low” in this context means relative ranking among components of mathematical abilities or each sector of multiple intelligences. Further, when students have high mathematical abilities, they tend to show high multiple intelligences, and vice versa; however, the correlation between reasoning ability and reversible thinking was contrary to the above-mentioned relation. Mathematically gifted children with low reasoning ability have higher spatial intelligence, bodily-kinesthetic intelligence, intrapersonal intelligence, and interpersonal intelligence than those with high reasoning ability. Meanwhile, students with low reversible thinking show higher linguistic intelligence, spatial intelligence, and bodily-kinesthetic intelligence that those with high reversible thinking. This study can help to enhance understanding of characteristics in multiple intelligences and mathematical abilities of elementary students with mathematical gift and carry out research for mathematical abilities of those talented students based on the developmental perspective for human multiple intelligences. Based on this understanding, more developmental and in-depth researches are expected to be conducted for studying individual characteristics of mathematically gifted children and their mathematical abilities.
