A case study on the cognitive development of the infant from 6 to 12-months-old : based on Piaget's Theory Choi, Eun Ji Major in Early Child Education Graduate School of Education Kosin University Supervised by Professor Kim, Sang Yoon Summary The object of this study lies in researching literature to identify how the secondary circular reactions from and coordination of secondary circular reactions from the sensori-motor stage among Piaget's cognitive development stages are represented through infants' behavior pattern and in comparing and analyzing the modern behavior pattern of secondary circular reactions (6 to 8 months) and coordination of secondary circular reactions (8 to 12 months) with Piaget's study. For this purpose, following research questions were established. First, how is the development of object concept, causal relation, and imitation shown through behavior patterns in 6 to 8-month-old infants? Second, how is the development of object concept, causal relation, and imitation shown through behavior patterns in 8 to 12-month-old infants? This study recorded the behaviors of the subjects by physical/motion, verbal, perception, social, and emotional. These were taken as the standards for behaviors representing the learning of object concept, causal relationship, and imitation, and were compared and analyzed for qualitative research. The following is a summary of the study. The infants (6 to 8 months) in the secondary circular reactions stage showed abbreviated behaviors towards familar subject. That is, towards something that has been experienced in the past, the subjects used a specific schema. This shows that the infants' primative classes are formed during this period. Also, the behavior of understanding the relationship between their physical movement and sounds shows that the concept of causal relation – the initial relationship of themselves and the object – is established. It was shown that during this stage, the infants observe and imitate mother or father's words or actions. And in infants' behaviors, development of visual permanence, tactile permanence, and object permanence was observed. However it was also found that object permanence is not completely developed during this stage. The infants (8 to 12 months) in the coordination of secondary circular reactions stage removed obstacles and achieved their goals. And this showed that the infants have established the means-end schema. The infants could also forecast upcoming motion seeing repetitive motions. Even they could not see their own movement, they could understand the relationship between their physical movement and the model’s movement and try imitating a new motion. In a simple motion of the object, the infants could understand the object permanence, and in a complex motion, it was observed that the infants did not completely understand. From the observation of modern infants’ behavior patterns, it was found that each stage of cognitive development happened as described in Piaget’s study. Although there are criticisms on Piaget’s study on infants’ cognitive development, this study on modern infants’ behaviors confirmed that to this day, Piaget’s cognitive development stage is valid and supported.
