This study paid attention to the recently found positive perspective, empowerment, as a factor affecting happiness of adolescents and aimed to determine how ego-identity, one of their tasks, appeared in the association between empowerment and happiness.
To do this, the theories and domestic literature regarding empowerment, ego-identity, and happiness were reviewed. The following specific questions were set: first, do adolescents' empowerment, ego-identity, and happiness depend on their socio-demographic characteristics?; second, how does adolescents' empowerment affect their ego-identity and happiness?; third, does adolescents' ego-identity have any mediating effect on the association between their empowerment and happiness?
Purposive sampling was performed to include seventh- to ninth-graders at sixteen community children centers and one middle school in Cheongju. Personal visits were made to the community children centers to conduct a survey and I gave a detailed description of the contents and methods of the survey to a teacher in the school, who conducted the survey in students. 91 questionnaires from the centers and 163 from the school were analyzed. Of these, 100 copies were completed by adolescents from poor families and 154 by those from non-poor families.
For data analysis, an SPSS/WIN 20.0 program was used to perform frequency analysis, descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis. The results can be summarized as follows:
First, as for the variation in empowerment, happiness, and ego-identity by gender, financial status, family type, school year, and academic performance of adolescents, empowerment, happiness, and ego-identity depended only on gender, school year, and academic performance.
Second, as for the direct effects of adolescents' empowerment on their ego-identity and happiness, empowerment had statistically significant effects on ego-identity and happiness.
Third, ego-identity had no mediating effect on the association between empowerment and happiness of adolescents from poor families. In contrast, the association between (intra- and inter-personal) empowerment and happiness of those from non-poor families was completely mediated by their ego-identity. The association between empowerment and happiness was partially mediated by ego-identity in the entire population of adolescents. This result implies that empowerment may not only have direct effects on happiness but also affect ego-identity, through which it may affect happiness.
On the basis of discussion about the results, a few practical and policy-related suggestions can be made: first, it is necessary to differentiate happiness programs for adolescents according to gender; second, it is necessary to provide middle school students with programs to improve their ego-identity; third, it is necessary to make a plan for starting academic performance management for adolescents in poor families when they are young; fourth, it is necessary to allow adolescents to become aware of the importance and effectiveness of participation activities and become confident in their leadership; fifth, it is necessary to give adolescents time to get counseling and inquire into themselves within the boundary of school education so that they can promote empowerment, ego-identity, and happiness; sixth, it is necessary to build additional community institutions and facilities, where students may feel free to share their own story, and publicize them.
