MBR (Membrane Bio-Reactor) process is useful for wastewater treatment but consume enormous energy to control membrane fouling, EC(Electro-coagulation) technique has been applied to MBR to soluve this problem. The purpose of this study is to understand membrane fouling mitigation according to change of microbial characteristics of activated sludge by EC. In batch experiment, EC was applied to activated sludge suspension under operating time and different CD (current density) condition. The total fouling resistance (Rc+Rf) decreased from 18 to 79 % as current density increased 10 to 40 A/m2, showing that the EC improved the membrane filtration efficiency. Bothe the PSD (Particles size distribution) and the soluble organic concentration were not changed nearly before and after the EC. Alumunum hydroxide generated from aluminum electrode by electro-chemical reaction can be acted as a dynamic membrane which is avoiding direct pollution of membrane. that is, generated these by EC accumulate on membrane surface and decrease cake layer and fouling resistance. When EC was applied for 5 hour under the high current density, flux efficiency decreased, it is speculated that higher CD have a bad influence on membrane fouling and physiological characteristics of activated sludge In continuous mode, EC experiment performed for 50 day when current density is 2.5 A/m2. TMP of EC-MBR was not changed while control-MBR increased over time and EC also improved membrane filtration performances through flux enhancement . The portion of colloidal particle under 2 um decreased over operating time, which affect decreasing total fouling resistance and mitigation of membrane fouling. Also EC decreased bound EPS concentration than control throughout the experiment, it is considered electric current cause desorption of bound EPS from floc surface or change from high molecular substance to biodegradable substance. And low current density appeared to have greater impact on the variation of polysaccharide concentration variation than protein in activated sludge suspension.
