In modern people, hair loss causes pathological and psychological problems in a complicated manner. A comparative study on changes in interpersonal stress, depression conditions and quality of life because of hair loss is an essential process to understand the psychological problems caused by hair loss. Even though the progress of hair loss and time of its occurrence are expected to affect psychological factors, there have been almost no studies on them. Therefore, this study was conducted in awareness of a necessity of classifying the progress of hair loss by age and the stage and duration of hair loss, investigating changes in interpersonal stress, depression conditions and quality of life and comparing psychological factors between those suffering from hair loss and those with healthy hair. The study results would reveal how the progress of hair loss by age, hair loss stage and hair loss duration is correlated with interpersonal stress, depression conditions and quality of life. After establishing a theoretical ground through a literature view, an empirical study was conducted using a questionnaire survey. In terms of a theoretical study, the concept and characteristics of interpersonal stress, depression and quality of life were examined by referring to domestic and foreign references. Then, the effects of these factors on hair loss were examined. In terms of an empirical study, research model and research hypothesis were set based on the variables derived from the theoretical review. Then, a self-administered questionnaire survey was conducted against 1,200 people living in Seoul, Gyeonggi, Incheon, Suwon and Cheonan. The subjects were divided into hair loss group and non-hair-loss group, and general characteristics and hair care methods by scalp and hair conditions were investigated. To figure out the effects of hair loss stage and duration on interpersonal stress, depression conditions and quality of life, frequency analysis and crosstabulation analysis were performed using SPSS 21.0. To analyze dependent relevance among the variables, χ²-test was carried out. In addition, factor analysis and reliability analysis were conducted to examine interpersonal stress, depression conditions and quality of life individually. Furthermore, multiple regression analysis was done to find out the effects of the degree of hair loss by age on interpersonal stress, depression conditions and quality of life between a hair loss group and a non-hair-loss group. According to analysis on hair and scalp conditions depending on the progress of hair loss, a hair loss group was more interested in hair care such as use of anti-hair-loss shampoo or drying hair in cold wind than a non-hair-loss group with statistical significance. In terms of a scalp type, sensitive and oily scalp was higher in a hair-loss group with statistical significance. In terms of the number of hairs coming out and the number of thin hairs, a hair-loss group was greater than a non-hair-loss group. According to analysis on interpersonal stress, depression conditions and quality of life by the hair loss stage and hair loss duration between a hair loss group and non-hair-loss group, high correlation was observed in a young hair loss group (age), depression caused by interpersonal stress and quality of life caused by the depression. In other words, as the respondents were younger, they revealed a negative view on hair loss. In addition, they were greatly influenced by social factors. In terms of hair loss stage, a lack of confidence on interpersonal relationship was observed in the stage I. Then, they often experienced depression including anxiety, concern and uneasiness. As the depression got more serious, they were less satisfied with their social lives. In other words, a negative view on hair loss was greater in the early hair loss stage. In terms of hair loss duration, high correlation was observed when it was 1 year or less. In terms of interpersonal stress and quality of life, significant correlation was large when the hair loss duration was over one year, which means that interpersonal stress is stronger in an early stage of hair loss, and the quality of life is lower when hair loss duration is longer.
