Public libraries are changing their role from just provision of information to provision of a variety of services, including information services and cultural programs, for their communities. The library users also tend to expect public libraries as a place to support their various needs, such as group studying and relaxing. The spatial structure in the libraries have gradually been changed to satisfy the users with their changed expectations. Previous studies about library space, however, mostly concentrated on defining library spaces or on suggesting a new space to meet the needs of users. It is hard to find studies to identify relationships between factors in library space and other factors in library management, marketing and performance. Public libraries in Korea mostly divide their spaces by age of users, types of providing materials, and users’ behavior. There is also a variety of sizes and structures in spatial division in the libraries. Therefore, the users would have their main using spaces in the libraries for their needs, and can be categorized and have different perceptions on their libraries in terms of their main using spaces. This study attempts to figure out differences in user perceptions in terms of their main using spaces and the spatial types of the libraries through statistical test. This study analyzes the spatial structure in public libraries from two different perspectives, such as spatial type and main using space, to figure out relationships between factors in the library space and users’ perception. To do this, first, in-depth interviews with public library users to check out the feasibility of the study by analyzing relationship between library spaces and user perceptions. Then, three spatial types of public libraries are identified based on an investigation of several public libraries: divided, partially integrated, and integrated. Then, a questionnaire survey is conducted in several public libraries in those three types to collect data about user perceptions not only on library space but also on the library itself in terms of satisfaction, importance, value, and loyalty. The survey data are analyzed using several statistical techniques, including one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). The results are as follow. First, there are significant differences in user's perception between spatial types of libraries. Specifically, the differences are identified in the perception of library facility, perception of library importance and perception of library’s role. The divided type shows the highest average score of the perception of library facility, but integrated type appears the highest of the perception of library importance. Users tend to regard the libraries as a place to study in divided type libraries, whereas users in integrated type libraries tend to visit the libraries mainly for reading. Second, there are significant differences in user’s perception in terms of their main using spaces. Especially, the differences are identified in the perception on librarians, perception of library importance and perception of library’s role. Children reading room users appears the highest average scores in the perception on librarians and library importance. On the other hands, study room users show comparatively low average score in the perception of library importance and tend to regard libraries as studying place. Overall, public libraries would better lead to integration of their spatial structure in order for their basic role, such as provision of information, material and cultural program, based on the results. The users tend to visit for reading, to stay in libraries longer, and to contact with librarians easily in the integrated type libraries. A result from a two-way ANOVA test with spatial types and library sizes as independent variables, however shows the influence of library size on user’s perception of library in integrated type libraries. That is, there would be appropriate library sizes for the spatial types. This study is meaningful in terms of its first attempt to explore the relationships between factors in library space and user’s perception on the library. Based on this, it is suggested that libraries should their spatial structures for developing user’s positive perception on the libraries.
