This study has motivated from noticing that the specific Ikgong bracket was found in some of the Buddhist temples in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province which was used to be the Official Buildings and the Palaces.
It was named referred to ‘Gung-ik-gong(宮翼工) bracket’ because it is found in the royal palace. This study would research the formation and development of it and investigate the reason why it is used in the Buddhist temple based on the social and religious(Buddhist) background. Furthermore, this study focuses on determining the implications of History of Buddhist Architecture.
First, the distinguished form of Gung-il-gong from other bracket is ‘Soeseo(牛舌)’ is flat on the upside and finishes like a bird's beak at the end of it. Otherwise, there are very similar structure between ik-gong bracket in temples and Gung-ik-gong in official buildings. On the social background, it is imported when the wage system was adopted by the Buddhist society.
Next, this study would investigate the relationship between the Buddhist and the Royal household during the late-19th century because the most of temples supported by the government had used Gung-ik-gong bracket.
In addition to technical support, there is a document indicated the craftsman involved in the national construction are also taken part in a Buddhist process. Based on the financial and labor support from the government, It is assumed that Gung-ik-gong might be applied to Buddhist temples.
Only the Buddhist temples which were very close relationship with the government had used the Gungikgong bracket. The Gungikgong is only found in a sub-Buddha-Hall(副佛殿) like 'Myungbujeon(冥府殿)', 'Jijangjeon(地藏殿)' and 'Sansingak(山神閣)'.
These buildings are for the prayer places of individual and families welfare and of ancestor's easy passage into eternity. For this purpose of these places, the members of royal family did not only visit the temples for their prayers, but also supported the temples financially.
Gung-ik-gong is used in Buddhist temple from late 19th to the early 20th century until Japanese occupation. It has been found in some buildings after this period. It is supposed that the architectural technology has been continued until the middle 20th.
The bracket style of Ikgong was divided into Buddhist and Government Architecture, and each had been developed independently. In the late Joseon Dynasty, the independent technology probably has been affected by each other or made a common area in method and idiom. It could be considered that there were situational current between the official and the private services.
These circumstances could be explained that the Government probably had given support to the Buddhists financial resources and human labors. It is believed that these supports made the temples to take Gung-ik-gong bracket.
