Severe spinal cord injury patients refer to spinal-injured patients with injuries within the levels Cervical 1 to Cervical 4. Most patients at C4 level injury are not able to use their arm and leg muscles. Their sensory nerves are active just below the neck to part of the upper chest, but they have no sensory feeling in their legs or torso. This makes it inevitable to develop various assistive devices or robots to help their daily and social lives. Nonetheless, 1/3 of disabled people do not use the assistive device they own, mostly because these devices are inefficient and not user-friendly. This evidently shows a lack of consideration of the usability in developing assistive device for the disabled. Severe spinal cord injury patients are physically challenged and face limitations in their movements. Therefore, it is more than important to consider usability, since low device usability not only leads to usage inconvenience but also can be a direct factor for not being able to utilize the device. Preceding domestic and international research on assistive robots that replace hand work mostly focused more on the functionality of the robotic technology and less on usability. Also, since most research on the mobile device application user interface design for disabled people are targeted towards blind and deaf people, there is still a need for studies on mobile device application user interface design particularly for physically challenged people. Therefore, in this research, author's objective is to design the mobile device application user interface, which is the brain center of the hand work assistive robot, and to study the process, method and result. This in return, will enhance the usability of hand work assistive robots for the physically challenged. In this study, the understanding of users and user environment were promoted through literature reviews, including books, journals, research reports and news articles, as well as through field work involving focus group interviews, observation and one-to-one interviews. Second, a persona of the hand work assistive robot was created, necessary adjustment to the function of the robot previously defined by preceding studies were made and mobile device application functions and menu were developed. Third, based on the characteristics and user environment of severe spinal cord injury patients, usage method and process of the hand work assistive robot and mobile device application were developed. Fourth, the author developed the mobile device application menu and a display screen that matches the usage process. Prototyping Evaluation, Heuristic Evaluation, Usability Evaluation were also conducted and the results were used to modify and develop the display screen to a level technologically feasible enough for the robot design and control equipment development company. Fifth, based on the hand work assistive robot mobile device application user interface design and its evaluation, author came up with a design guideline of the mobile device application user interface design for severe spinal cord injured patients. The author hope that any implications learned from this process will serve as the basis of user interface research and development for assistive device or assistance robot practitioners and researchers in related fields. Eventually, the author aim to contribute in encouraging the disabled people to overcome their disabilities and lead their own lives.
