The effect of science-arts confluence lesson on creativity and scientific attitude of elementary school students원문보기

In a rapidly changing contemporary situation, creative and convergent-gifted human resources are in great demand. Against this backdrop, creativity and convergence have emerged as new educational alternatives. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to find out how science-arts confluence lessons have influence on the improvement of creativity and scientific attitudes of elementary school students. This study set up two study questions as follows. First, whether science-arts confluence lessons are effective in improving the creativity of elementary school students or not? Second, whether science-arts confluence lessons are effective in enhancing the scientific attitudes of elementary school students or not?
The experiment was conducted by targeting two fifth-grade classes of an elementary school located in ‘City A’, and by dividing them into the experimental group and the control group. As the experiment treatment, a total of 12 science-arts confluence lessons were offered to the experimental group for a period of 4 weeks, while the control group participated into the regular single curriculum classes of arts and science. The pre-test and the post-hoc test were conducted by using the standardized ‘Elementary School Student Integrated Creativity Test’ developed by Lee Gyeong-Hwa (2014) and ‘Science-related Affective Characteristics Evaluation Checklist’ developed by Kim Hyo-Nam (1998). For data processing, the SPSS 22.0 program was used to conduct the t-test between the experimental group and the control group, while the analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) was carried out to verify the effectiveness of science-arts confluence lessons. The study results are as follows.
First, the science-arts confluence lessons were found to be effective in improving the overall creativity of elementary school students. The experimental group showed significant levels of improvement in creativity and all its sub variables (fluency, accuracy, imaginativeness, flexibility, agility and originality).
Second, the science-arts confluence lessons were observed to be effective in enhancing the scientific attitudes of elementary school students. The experimental group showed significant levels of enhancement in interest and attitude among the three domains of affective characteristics (perception, interest and attitude).
All in all, as the science-arts confluence lessons were found to be effective in improving the creativity and scientific attitudes of elementary school students, it is deemed necessary for elementary schools to offer their students science-arts confluence lessons in order to nurture their creative mind and scientific attitudes.
