Increasing urbanization, industrialization, and huge population are leading to the deterioration of the water quality. Contaminated water has conventionally been treated by physical, chemical and biological methods. Phytoremediation is a technology that involves the use of plants to remove pollutants from the environment. Besides being an economical, energy-efficient, and eco-friendly method, it can be applied to the large contaminated areas and is especially useful in treating a variety of contaminants (heavy metals, radionuclides, and organic substances). This study was carried out to evaluate the removal capacity of the heavy metals Cd and Cu as well as the nutrients N and P from the synthetic wastewater, using Spirodela polyrhiza, a species of duckweed living in the water. Additionally, the study was performed to compare their removal efficiencies by the Spirodela polyrhiza, according to the kinds and types of pollutants in the synthetic wastewater. As N, P, Cd and Cu were singly added to the synthetic wastewater with the Spirodela polyrhiza, their respective concentrations were decreased over time. Their removal efficiencies follows the order: P (90%)> Cu (73%)> N (54%)> Cd (43 %). In treatment of binary mixture of N and P, the removal efficiencies of N and P were 71% and 91%, respectively, where as in treatment of binary mixture of Cd and Cu, those of Cd and Cu were 49% and 77%, respectively. In the treatment of quaternary mixture of N, P, Cd, and Cu, the removal efficiencies of N, P, Cd, and Cu were 46%, 62%, 24%, and 42%, respectively. According to the number of mixture of pollutants, the removal efficiencies of pollutants were more efficient in binary mixture treatments than in quaternary mixture treatments. The pollutants contained in the Spirodela polyrhiza were analyzed when treated with single, binary and quaternary mixtures. As a result, the pollutants were the most included inside the plant treated with the binary mixture. On the other hand, they were least contained in the quaternary mixture. The results were consistent with those mentioned in the previous that their removal efficiencies were higher in the treatment of binary mixture than those in the treatment of quaternary mixture. Therefore, it appears that a variety of pollutants can be removed by a Spirodela polyrhiza when they existed in form of single, binary and quaternary mixture. On the analysis of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) for the root of Spirodela polyrhiza, the Cd and Cu appear to be absorbed to the root surface, while the N and P are considered to be absorbed into the its root as the form of ion. Based on the results obtained from this study, it appears that the duckweed Spirodela polyrhiza can be potentially used as one of the efficient and eco-friendly water treatment technologies for the removal of the nutrients N and P and the heavy metals from the industrial wastewater. The further research is extensively needed to elucidate the mechanisms involved in the removal of the pollutants by the duckweed Spirodela polyrhiza from the industrial wastewater.
