The purpose of this study is to examine how violent victimization at school influences depression and anxiety of children. The subjects of this study were elementary school students in grades 4 to 6 and middle school students in grades 1 to 3 from 2 elementary schools and 2 middle schools in “J” City of North Jeolla Province and an elementary school and a middle school in “M” County of North Jeolla Province. The subjects were asked to fill out questionnaires among which 322 completed with sincere answers were used for statistical analysis. A method used in this study was a questionnaire on three variables of violent victimization at school, depression and anxiety of children with previous studies considered. SPSS 21.0 was used for statistical analysis of the collected data. Frequency analysis, Cronbach’s α, descriptive statistics(mean and standard deviation), multiple regression analysis and t-tests were used to analyze the data. Results from the analysis are as follows: First, in terms of the subjects’ school violence victimization, the mean value was 1.62. Among the four sub-factors, the highest score was the score of assault and verbal abuse followed by ostracism, cyber violence, blackmail and extortion. When it comes to experiencing depression, the mean value was 2.22. Among the sub-factors, the score of apprehension and self-denial was higher than that of loss of interest in study and daily activities. Regarding anxiety, the mean value was 2.34. Among the sub-factors, the score of emotional disturbance and the difficulty of making decisions was the highest. Negative judgement came next, followed by sleeping and gastrointestinal disorders. Second, when correlations between the subjects’ characteristics and the subjects’ violent victimization at school were examined, there was a significant difference between the girls and the boys only in ostracism in which the mean value of the girls’ scores was found to be higher than that of the boys. And in terms of the effect of age on school violence victimization, middle school students experienced more blackmail, extortion, cyber violence, assault and verbal abuse than elementary school students. There was a significant difference between elementary school students and middle school students in the mean value of each sub-factor mentioned above. Third, when the effect of subjects’ school violence victimization on their depression was examined, the greatest influence was found to be ostracism followed by blackmail and extortion. When it comes to influences on the sub-factors, ostracism was a significant influence on apprehension and self-denial. Also the greatest influence on loss of interest in study and daily activities was found to be ostracism followed by blackmail and extortion. When the effect of school violence victimization on anxiety was examined the biggest influence was ostracism followed by blackmail and extortion. Ostracism had a significant influence on negative judgement and emotional disturbance and the difficulty of making decisions. Ostracism followed by blackmail and extortion was also the greatest influence on sleeping and gastrointestinal disorders. Findings of this study on the effect of children’s school violence victimization on their depression and anxiety are as follows: First, the most common experience in school violence victimization was found to be assault and verbal abuse followed by ostracism, cyber violence, and blackmail and extortion, which shows verbal abuse and minor assault are common among the students at school. Regarding depression, apprehension and self-denial were more experienced by the subjects than loss of interest in study and daily activities. With regard to anxiety, the most common experiences were found to be emotional disturbance and the difficulty of making decisions followed by negative judgement, and sleeping and gastrointestinal disorders. Anxiety was more experienced than depression although there was not a big difference between the mean values of depression and anxiety. Second, regarding the gender factor, girls experienced more school violence victimization than boys. It seems this result reflects the tendency that ostracism occurs more among the girls, and the boys are relatively less sensitive than the girls. This calls for tailored educational programs aimed at ostracism prevention that considers sensitivity of the girls. With regard to the age factor, middle school students experienced more school violence victimization than elementary school students. It shows older students were more exposed to school violence victimization than younger ones. Regarding ostracism, there was not a significant difference between middle school students and elementary school students. The fact that both middle school and elementary school students fall victim to school violence indicates ostracism is serous not only among middle school students but also among elementary school students. Third, when the effect of school violence victimization on depression and anxiety was examined in connection with school violence factors, the result from ostracism stood out. It shows how serious ostracism is among students as ostracism not only influenced both depression and anxiety, but also had the greatest influence on them. Besides, ostracism is emerging as a serious problem on and offline although cyber violence did not show a significant influence on school violence victimization in this study. Based on the findings of this study, my conclusion is that it is urgent to carry out educational programs and take necessary measures to prevent ostracism among the students.
