Ph. D. Thesis A Study on the Dragon Tales of Korea - With a focus on the acceptance patterns of transmission groups - Park Da-Wan Major in Korean Literature Department of Korean Language and Literature Graduate School Yeungnam University (Supervised by Prof. Kim Hwa-gyeong, Kim Gi-ho) Abstract This study set out to investigate the patterns of dragon acceptance and their meanings among those who were responsible for the transmission of dragon tales by examining the dragon tales that have been passed down in literature and through oral communication. For that purpose, the investigator set the following subproblems and answered them: First, the study analyzed the roles of dragons in stories as a zen and water god related to civilian groups, in the way that the issues they faced in life were solved through the acceptance of the dragon, and ultimately what they intended by accepting the dragon in relation to their futuristic life. The analysis results show that dragons would either realize the goals of the protagonists as their helpers or warn them against their wrongdoing by causing damage to them in these tales. The dragons would also appear as their opponents to be exterminated. In these cases, people would pray for their fortune by projecting their humble wishes onto the dragons, get punished for violating a taboo against dragons, which were divine entities they prayed to for their fortune, or deny the divinity of dragons. In all these tales, however, people shared a common belief of considering dragons to be close to them because they believed that dragons governed the climate and played critical roles in good harvests. Second, the study analyzed the roles of dragons in stories as the zen gods to protect the country and symbolize the royal authority related to the ruling class, in the way that the issues they faced in life were solved through the acceptance of the dragon in stories, and ultimately what they intended, by accepting the dragon in relation to their futuristic life. The analysis results reveal that dragons were helpers to the protagonists that represented the ruling class in all of these tales, and played their role as the helpers. When dragons were related to the ruling class or transmission group, they served as media for the ruling ideology because they took advantage of the dragon's divinity, transcendence, and completeness to cover up their problems in their historic life and depicted their idealized life. Third, the study analyzed the role of dragons in stories as the zen gods for Dhrmapāla with regard to the Buddhist monks group, in the way that the issues they faced were solved through the acceptance of the dragon in stories, and ultimately what they tried to get through the acceptance of the dragon in relation to their futuristic life. The analysis results indicate that dragons appeared as helpers for protagonist, representing the Buddhist faith in those tales and contributing to the establishment of Buddhist ideology, which was the purpose of those tales. The Buddhist monks group or transmission group knew that Buddhism had heterogeneity as an imported religion and used dragons to get rid of its heterogeneity by naturally connecting it to the divinity, transcendence and completeness of dragons. Finally, the study investigated the effects of intentions and goals of dragon acceptance among the certain groups that were responsible for the transmission of dragon tales on the transmission power of dragon tales by comparing literature tales with oral ones. It also identified the causes of particular phenomenon in the remaining heritage of oral transmission; thus, figuring out the principles of transmitting dragon tales and looking further at the future direction of dragon tales. The findings show that certain transmission groups accepted dragons to fulfill the goal of creating alternative stories to solve the issues they faced in life. The dragons introduced in their stories served as media for them to achieve their goals. The three transmission groups were connected to one another through the acceptance of the dragon, with the dragon of the civilian group, the nature of zen and water god, serving as a common link, around which the dragon of the ruling class to represent royal authority and that of the Buddhist monks group as a zen god for Dhrmapāla were accepted. In dragon-related stories as alternative ones, the nature of dragons as a foundation or medium was that of zen and water gods, with their nature as zen gods for Dhrmapāla and symbols of royal authority expanded around their nature as a medium. In literature, the dragon of each group had its own transmission power. In the remaining heritage of oral transmission, however, the dragon of the ruling class and that of the Buddhist monks group gradually lost their transmission power; whereas, that of the civilian group continued to hold its transmission power. The factors of its transmission power can be explained with the civilian group, which was the subject of transmission and continued to claim its presence, even in different forms from the past, and the nature of dragons, which was condensed into that of Zen and water gods, and had something to do with universal life issues and their solution. Dragon stories or alternative stories accepted to fulfill the interests and goals of common groups maintained their strong transmission power, from which the principles of transmission were extracted and related to dragon tales. One is that the nature and tales of dragons accepted and transmitted in tales by the civilian group will continue to be transmitted in the future as a base, like in the past and present. The other is that the nature of dragons in the civilian group will be the base of secondary and tertiary groups with their certain goals; and thus, the driving force to create the nature of new dragons to fulfill their goals. In that sense, the dragon tales of Korea that accepted archetypal dragons will continue to serve as the source of new dragon stories in the future like in the past.
