The purpose of this study was to examine the surrealistic aesthetics of Hong Sang-soo's narratives. Hong Sang-soo's narratives are based on the daily routines of modern society, which are caught by his unique close observation. However, different from its general meanings, the daily routines in his movies are fragmented and replaced, and express coincidences found in the scope of daily routines, thus having not realistic but surrealistic meanings. In this study, the surrealistic expressive factors of Hong Sang-soo's narratives were analytically classified into objective coincidence, death instinct and dream, and then its meaning was interpreted within the scope of narratives. The most important principle of surrealism is the freedom of human psychology, namely the liberation of human mentality, and therefore surrealism regards researches on unconsciousness to liberate human psychology as its core aesthetic speculation. Hong Sang-soo maintains the stern objectivity of filmic daily routines and then tries to seek for mysterious coincidences within the scope of daily routines. The aesthetic directing point of his filmic direction seems to be interpreted in line with surrealistic aesthetics. Within the narration of movies, Hong Sang-soo strictly realizes the objective coincidences of daily routines, which are reveled through accidental discoveries and encounters, thus presenting filmic character's internal desires indirectly. In addition, he objectively manifests the desire of death instinct tabooed and suppressed in character's unconsciousness to the external world through a variety of filmic motives, and for this, he describes character's 3-dimensional internality from a variety of perspectives. And by means of compressed and displaced symbols of desire, he actualizes the unconscious world of dreams or imaginations in movies with uncanny looks. By establishing a surrealistic point to which filmic character's consciousness and unconsciousness converge, he induces moviegoer's harmonious speculation. Study findings show that surrealistic principles of aesthetics were newly manifested in Hong Sang-soo's narratives with the form of composite filmic expressions. By closely corresponding to the whole narration of movies, those surrealistic expressive factors function as an important filmic aesthetic technique that induces writer Hong Sang-soo's unique thematic consciousness. This finding proves the fact that even today surrealism can be a means of artistic speculation for human total liberation.
