Abstract
Most of the projects to improve urban streams have carried out uniform, simple maintenance in a few sections and ended up transforming the waterside for physical parks or parking lots. As a result, maintenance efforts for the streams exerted a bad influence on water quality and ecosystem. Accordingly, in this paper, I examined the current condition of urban streams and checked how the condition for an ecological environment has been established in an effort to develop urban streams into ecological streams so that a variety of ecosystems can be created. Through the research, I set up directions to make ecological streams, and have drawn a conclusion that water quality should be enhanced and sufficient water flow be obtained as pre-conditions for establishing ecological streams. To be definitive, I have presented a few sewage disposal measures to improve water quality, and suggestions to secure enough stream flow by establishing dams, making changes to water courses, developing underground water and dealing with sewage from home. In addition, in order to establish an ecological stream, I proposed to establish bank protections, create ecotones, grow fish and establish meandering waterways as well as to establish rapids by using ground still bed stills, secure passages for wild animals and establish healthy vegetation via naturalization. As a result, this research will help manage streams as flood control to prevent damage from abnormal weather conditions, including floods, not just as the subject to be dealt with. Not only that, this paper will help create urban streams which citizens can visit and take a rest in an ecological environment, thus giving an ecological ability to streams that have lost their ecological ability or polluted streams.
