Chapter Ⅰ. Insect fauna of Eulsukdo Eulsukdo, restored artificial wetland, is located at the Nakdong River Estuary that is brackish water area. Because Eulsukdo is important and valuable natural ecosystem as well as artificial ecosystem, insect diversity was investigated to utilize obtained information for the improvement of wetland ecosystem. Eulsukdo was divided into 4 sections (4 wetland) and insect were surveyed from each wetland from May to October, 2011 by sweeping, brandishing, beating, direct collecting, and hearing methods. Three hundred and six species of 89 families in 11 orders were recorded from four surveyed wetlands in Eulsukdo. The highest numbers were recorded in Hemiptera with 81 species of 25 families, and followed by Coleoptera with 65 species of 18 families. Largely numbers were collected in Aphrophora maritima with 2,706 individuals, and followed by Nysius (Nysius) plebejus with 978 individuals and Paromius exiguus with 653 in turn. In Coleoptera, Ophraella communa was the highest collected insect numbering 634 individuals. The collected species was different depending on wetland, i.e., site 1 had the most species as 182, and followed by 177 at site 2, 171 at site 4, and 142 at site 3 in turn. However, collected numbers were the highest at site 3 (3,154), and followed by site 4, site 1, and site 2 in turn. There were site-specific species. For example, site 1 had seven site-specific species including longicorn beetle, Spondylis buprestoides. Site 2 had four site- specific species including dragonfly, Epitheca marginata. The butterfly Taraka hamada was site 4 specific species. Out of collected species, there were 12 species of 6 families in 4 orders which preferred edge of the water such as riverside or seaside. Korean endemic species were 3 species of 3 families in 3 orders and species requiring admission for overseas were 20 species of 15 families in 8 orders. Red data of endangered insect in Korea, Mimela fusania was observed in the course of study. The precipitation of July influenced occurrence of insects. Occurrence of A. maritima and Austroasca (Austroasca) vittata in Hemiptera and Propylea japonica and Harmonia axyridis in Coleoptera was influenced by the long spell of rainy weather in July. Decreased species in July were P. japonica, H. axyridis, Everes argiades, and A. maritima. A. (Austroasca) vittata and Balataea octomaculata were not observed in July. The number of insect species was higher at the artificially transplanted plant site. In the analysis of insect community of Eulsukdo, dominant index was 0.32, evenness index 0.66, species diversity 3.76, and richness index 32.58 in the study. In the analysis of insect community depending on wetland, the highest dominant index was 0.44 at site 4, but not different among other sites. Diversity and evenness indices of sites were 3.8 and 0.73 at site 1, 3.8 and 0.73 at site 2, 3.36 and 0.68 at site 3, and 3.24 and 0.62 at site 4, respectively. Richness index was the lowest at site 3. In the similarity comparison, site 1 and site 4 was clustered by the transplanted plants and site 2 and site 3 was clustered.
Chapter Ⅱ. Change of tiger beetle and butterfly occurrence in Elsukdo Yearly population change of three species of tiger beetle (Coleoptera: Cicindelidae) and butterflies in the five families of Lepidoptera was investigated in Eulsukdo from 2011 to 2015. Meanwhile, bare land of site 3 was reduced by paving a road in 2012. Observed numbers of tiger beetles were largely decreased as the years go by. Cicindela (Eugrapha) elisae koreanica was observed moving to other sites of studied wetland when the bare land of site 3 was disappeared. The number of C. (Eugrapha) elisae koreanica in the sites 1, 2, and 4 was variable depending on observed years even total numbers were decreased as the years go by. The number of this beetle in the sites 3 and 5 was also decreased but extremely low numbers were recorded in 2015 compared with former years, i.e. 8 and 32 in the sites 3 and 5, respectively while 96 and 247 in those sites in 2014. The number of C. (Myriochile) specularis was also variable except site 3 where had the same tendency with C. (Eugrapha) elisae koreanica. However, numbers of C. (Cicindela) transbaicalica hamifsciata was increased at site 3 numbering 5 in 2011, 10 in 2012, 29 in 2013, and 25 in 2014. Numbers of lepidopteran species in the five families were 24 at site 1, 23 at site 2, 19 at site 3, 21 at site 4, and 19 at site 5. The highest individual numbers were recorded at site 1 numbering 1,235, and followed by 581 at site 5, 552 at site 2, 543 at site 4 , and 228 at site 3 in turn. The number of species and individuals was increased at site 1, but decreased at site 2. Numbers of individuals were gradually decreased at site 3 while increased at site 5. At site 1, one immigrant species, Anosia chrysippus was collected in 2013 and two species, Hypolimnas bolina and Curetis acuta in 2014, respectively. The bioindex species, Argyreus hyperbius, Eurema hecabe, and Lampides boeticus were observed during the study.
Chapter Ⅲ. Comparison of past and present insect fauna Eulsuko Insect diversity of Eulsukdo from 1998 to 2012 were analyzed to compare yearly change of insects in Eulsukdo wetland. The insects were reviewed from recorded literatures which were intermittently surveyed insects from Eulsukdo for environmental assessment from 1998 to 2012. The insect data of 2011 included literature data and direct collection or observation for this work. Six hundred and eighty two insect species of 130 families in 12 orders were recorded to date. The lowest numbers of species were recorded as 57 species in 40 families in 1998 at the time of having the most disgusted installation such as sewage disposal. About fifteen species were increased from 2000 to 2005, but decreased in 2005 at the time of construction of Myeonggi Bridge. In 2009, the number of species was increased one and a half times numbering 250 because many plants were transplanted in the wetland. Although numbers were not changed in Orthoptera, increased about two times in Hemiptera, Coleoptera, Lepidoptera, and Diptera, one and a half times in Odonata, and 5 times in Hymenoptera. There were one to three species in Ephemeroptera, Dermaptera, Blattaria, and Neuroptera. The first dominant species was Nysius (Nysius) plebejus and the second species Aphrophora maritima in all literatures. Austroasca (Austroasca) vittata, Forficula scudderi, Formica (Serviformica) japonica, and Coccinella septempunctata were often found in the literatures as the third or fourth species. However, the first dominant species was A. maritima, the second N. (Nysius) plebejus, the third Parmius exiguus and the fourth Ophraella communa in this study based on collections in 2011. The highest number of family was recorded in the literature as 95 families, Myeongji bridge impact environmental assessment support and that of species was 306 in this study based on collections in 2011.
