A Study on Image Expressions about Existence and Illusion in the Modern Society : Focused on My Own Works원문보기

In the life of large cities rapidly changing, we live in a world where we share information and communicate with each other. When we pay attention to how the society has changed for the past years, we see that modern people try to provocatively expose their daily lives and make them look showy. As a result, such individuals’ desires get altered in media and show aspects that they deceive each other. In the modern society ruled by media information, images that reality is not separated from a virtual world make us look back on ‘True’ and ‘False’ or ‘Existence’ and ‘Illusion’.
As members of the society, modern people make and develop various relations, but they face most of them with the essence lost. In such relations, I expressed a psychological gap that exists between the modern people of existence and modern people of illusion through my own works, and particularly through this study, I intend to comparatively analyze such a gap in detail.
In the introduction, this study will find out the mutually-organic relation between space and humans, and through the relation, this study will comprehend the immanent meaning existing between reality and representation.
In the body paragraphs, this study intends to examine the aspects of modern people of existence created by the social structure through modern people who indiscriminately accept and use media as the society rapidly develops, and consider ‘new modern people of illusion’ created by the modern people by connecting them with places of social desires. Such places of social desires will be represented into virtual space through my own works. These places created into multiple virtual spaces that modern people of existence might have experienced will remind us of the essence of the world of existence.
Because of systems of the consumption society rapidly-developing, social desires are created, and modern people’s illusive aspects are projected on such desires. I collect them from specific consumption spaces and record them through photos. After developing the photos of record, I try to express such unfamiliar places absent from ‘new modern people of illusion’ through my own works, based on the standardized images that photo media have. These unfamiliar places are actual spaces that modern people often find in their daily lives, but I express them as human-absent spaces to make actual spaces meaningless, which shows the reflection of the real world that has been lost as well as an indiscriminate acceptance of media.
Moreover, this study explains such existence and illusion with Jean Baudrillard’s theory, ‘Illusion Replaced with Representation’. That is, through ‘simulacre’ that is an imitation of the reality, I make true existence disappear in my own works, and even by dissolving the characteristics of existing familiar objects, I try to bring about visual illusions.
As for work-expression methods, I create a space of fiction that does not actually exist, through a process of dissolving and reassembling the existing real spaces. The space of fiction is exposed through light and rapid brush strokes on the canvas, and I connect them in a methodological expression that expresses one-time images of the modern consumption society. Besides, through structural transformation by photo images, records move to memories, and auras are created again through photo images that auras have disappeared due to mass production. The space of fiction I have created shows unstable urban spaces, which are familiar between reality and desires and between existence and illusion, and visualizes it.
Overall, this study provides viewers with chances to reconsider their blind desires of illusion created by others’ gazes in their daily lives and clearly understand ‘individuals’ real spaces’ that exist between existence and illusion. Personally, I had a chance of thinking over the world of existence and the essence of humans through the creation of space along with the representation of records and memories, and through this study, I attempted to deepen such an idea and researched it. In the near future, I will work on the essence and existence of humans in depth based on this study.
