In the process of language development, various disfluency characteristics are observed in children’s speech according to discourse type. Previous studies have analyzed characteristics such as disfluency type or proportion, duration, and unit of repetition in order to examine disfluency characteristics in normal children, stuttering children, and children with language disorders. Disfluency clusters is a type of disfluency in which disfluency occurs twice or more times in sequence on the same word or on adjacent words, and is an important parameter indicating the disfluency characteristics of those with speech disorders, but it has not been covered much in previous studies. Thus, this study examined the disfluency clusters characteristic of school-age children who are in the process of discourse development and whose age is when disfluency takes place. Among discourse types, narrative and expository discourse were used as tasks, and the disfluency clusters characteristic was analyzed in terms of the proportion of disfluency clusters, type of disfluency clusters, and components of disfluency clusters. For this study, 25 three‐year‐old preschoolers and 25 five‐year‐old ones were sampled. For the task of narrative, ‘The Rabbit and the Turtle,’ a picture book for preschool children in the Paradise‐Fluency Assessment, was used, and for the task of expository discourse, the participants were instructed to recall what they had heard using career pictures. According to the results of this study, the proportion of disfluency clusters was higher in expository discourses than in narratives for both three‐year‐old and five‐year‐old children, and the proportion of disfluency clusters in narratives and expository discourses was higher in three‐year‐old children than in five‐year‐old ones. Second, narratives of SLD type were not observed in either of the two groups, and those of OD type were more frequent than those of mixed type. In expository discourses as well, the SLD type was not observed, and the OD type was more frequent than the mixed type as in narratives. Third, among narratives, those with 2 or 3 components were more frequent than those with 4 or more components, and among expository discourses as well, those with 2 or 3 components were more frequent than those with 4 or more components. Moreover, the interjection showed most highly. These findings suggest that in preschool-age children at the age of 3 and 5 who are in the process of discourse development, disfluency is observed more frequently in expository discourses, which develop in the later period due to their low construction ability, than in narratives, which develop early due to their high construction ability. In addition, disfluency clusters found in normal children’s utterances are part of disfluency observed in preschool children, and different from the pattern in stuttering children, the OD type consisting of normal disfluencies was observed frequently in the participants of this study. Among the types of disfluency clusters, interpolations, which are for earning time to construct sentences by drawing out words in utterance, occurred frequently. The outcomes of this study on preschool-age children’s disfluency cluster characteristic is expected to provide basic information for preparing diagnosis and assessment criteria to predict disfluency in children with stuttering or language disorders and to be useful to understand changes in children’s disfluency in clinical fields.
