A biosensor is an analytical device, used for the physicochemical detection of an analyte, that combines biological, or bioinspired receptor unit with unique specificities toward corresponding analytes. Nanoscale materials are very attractive for the development of biosensors because of its excellent features as like capability to provide strong electrocatalytic activity, stability and minimize surface fouling of the sensors resulting in high sensitivity and selectivity toward target analytes. In my first part of thesis, I demonstrate a method for the simultaneous detection of Pb2+ and Hg2+. Given the multi-color-fluorescence quenching capability of the gold nanoparticles and the possibility of developing functional nucleic acids for the detection of other metal ions, this study extends the application of oligonucleotides to a point-of-care detection system for the detection of multiple harmful metal ions in body fluids. In Second part, I also report the interaction between gold nanoparticles and UV-irradiated DNA as well as graphene oxide (GO) and UV-irradiated DNA. I also analyze the ability of phototoxic drugs to catalyze the formation of mutagens under UV irradiation with gold nanoparticles or GO. Because this method is highly sensitive and feasible, I propose that it could accelerate the screening of potential phototoxic drug candidates that would be able to sensitize mutagenic DNA. In last part, I account electrochemical assay which detects influenza virus strains with high sensitivity using lipid nanovesicles. This assay has high potential for point-of-care detection of a broad spectrum of influenza virus using small disposable screen-printed electrodes. In this thesis, I demonstrate an overview of diverse nanomaterial-based biosensors for environmental analysis and monitoring and their applications. The use of diverse nanomaterials has allowed the introduction of new remarkable and feasible environmental monitoring technology in biosensors
