Since the Korean war on 25 June, the economic support from surrounding advanced countries and the sustainable diplomatic relations with them must be accompanied in terms of a social and economic evolution process. For these reasons, the number of foreigners in Korea rapidly increased and furthermore it was obvious that Korean had to provide houses for them as friendly targets as of 1960s when two economic development plans performed.
Although all efforts for restoring the destroyed cities and houses resulted from the war were ongoing, the people’s living standard was still very poor in aspect of residential environment. In this situation, the new type of housing, called foreigner’s apartments, was built inside of Seoul for the purpose of settling housing problems for foreigners who visited for Korea’s economic development and obtaining foreign currencies through rent fee. Those apartments were the high–end level compared to the poor housing technologies of the time. Also, wastern style of housing plan which was totally different from the domestic one’s applied to the plan for foreigner’s apartments. Other than that, it seemed that there were many efforts for foreigners’ life in Korea.
Assuming that foreigners’ apartments construction was the process to adopt western housing plans and lifestyle to Koreans who were not familiar with apartment-form housing, foreigners’ apartments constructed in Seoul at 1960s and 1970s could be considered as the samples of plans for domestic apartments.
In this respect, this study’s purpose was to look into one side of history of Korean co-operative housing development scheme and investigate the adopting process of apartments which is the western housing style as well as their living culture.
First, we tried to organize the real details about the plan and construction of foreigners’ apartments by primary resources such as the original blueprints, and reporting records as regards the construction case of the foreigners’ apartments inside of Seoul from 60s to 70s. Second, we inspected closely the features of the construction plans for foreigners’ apartments via the analysis on the blueprints.
Based on those research plans, we analyzed the architectural features of foreigners’ apartments built in Seoul from 60s to 70s and we confirmed the similarity in planning aspects in consequence of comparing between foreigners’ apartments and domestic apartment constructed at the same period. On the basis of it, we tried to organize the foreigners’ apartments effects on domestic co-operative housing development scheme and it is as follows.
First, it was the very first and large scale apartments construction by the Korea Housing Corporation and they were leading the high-rise apartment construction in Korean co-operative housing scheme.
Second, the diversity of additional welfare facilities were started to be installed. There were a considerable gap between the planed additional welfare facilities of foreigners’ apartments and the apartments’ additional facilities for local people at the same period. Especially, playgrounds on the rooftop of hilltop foreigners’ apartments and outdoor pools to Han-river foreigners’ apartments were the unprecedented tryout.
Third, foreigners’ apartments became the starting point of flat grid planning for large scale apartments. The unit plan for the apartments by the Korea Housing Corporation was originally planned as the area of 10 py(33m2), but it had expanded a lot as of the period of constructing the foreigners’ apartments including 33 py(109m2) of hilltop apartments built in 1968.
Fourth, the unit plan of so-called bedroom-focus type was created in the middle of constructing foreigners’ apartments by combining a plan for privacy areas consisting of bedrooms, restroom, hallways and domestic staircase type apartments. This has been positioned at the main type of domestic apartment unit with diningroom-focus unit until the mid-1970s.
Fifth, a plan for the unit plan of foreigners’ apartments contained various additional places for storage and housekeepers, and those spaces of utility rooms, housekeepers’ rooms, the back side balcony were adopted to the local apartments unit after completion of foreigners’ apartments.
Meanwhile, other than the common features on the plan for the foreigners’ apartments, we could draw the historical meaning of foreigners’ apartments by an analysis on the differences and change process between the cases of 7 foreigners’ apartments that are the subject of this study.
First, the way of combining residential parts and additional welfare facilities kept changing. Those changes led the optimal way of combining additional welfare facilities that were suitable for Korean apartments culture.
Second, several type of housing such as plate-type, tower-type, staircase-type were tried in construction process of foreigners’ apartments, and they affected the housing plan development for the apartments by the Korea Housing Corporation.
As stated above, this study was for examining the influences of foreigners’ apartments to Korean’s housing plan through the comparison between the features of foreigners’ apartments constructed in Seoul at 1960s and 1970s and the plan for local apartments built at the same period.
We hereby can tell that foreigners’ apartments back then were demonstration cases where many apartments has been affected by foreigners’ apartments in aspect of Korean apartments plan and architectural technology, and a housing style that became the foundation to create the features that current local apartments have.
In conclusion, we hope that the residence-history meaning and values of foreigners’ apartments will be widely known through this study. Also, we hope that this study will be momentum for the continued study about the foreigners’ apartments.
