Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) containers are used for various packaging materials and food containers in the food field due to their lightweight, excellent strength, and better barrier properties of CO2 or O2 than other plastics. PET bottles have become essential in contemporary society by convenience and necessity based on the increase in consumers' economic activities, household income and the influence of well-being culture. However, toxic chemicals such as acetaldehyde, formaldehyde, antimony, phthalate, and bromate are detected from PET-bottled water, and in particular, acetaldehyde deteriorates the quality by causing off-flavor even if it migrates to PET-bottled water with a low odor threshold concentrations. There has been a continuous increase in complaints of odor from water bottled in PET materials. Acetaldehyde was detected from 10 out of 32 types of bottled drinking water and bottled tap water produced in 2014. They showed approximately 30% of detection frequency, 0.011 ㎎/L of mean concentration, and 0 to 0.070 ㎎/L of concentration range. In addition, there has been continuous research on the elution of acetaldehyde in PET bottles internationally since the early 2000s and domestically since the 2010s. However, it is a fact that little research has been conducted on reduction of acetaldehyde generation Therefore, this study aimed to present a plan to reduce acetaldehyde in the production and storage processes of PET-bottled water because it is generated by pyrolysis in the heating and molding processes when producing PET bottles causes off-flavor by migrating to PET-bottled water with a low odor threshold. As a research method for reducing acetaldehyde, the experiments were performed before and after injecting water in PET bottles. Before injecting water in PET bottles, quality changes of PET-bottled water were examined according to storage days of PET bottles and contact time with washing liquid. After injecting water in PET bottles, quality changes of PET-bottled waters was observed depending on storage conditions such as room temperature and direct sunlight. Acetaldehyde has a very low boiling point and is highly volatile. In addition, it is characterized by vaporizing at room temperature. The concentration of acetaldehyde eluted in PET-bottled water decreased because residual acetaldehyde in PET bottles is vaporized and decomposed in proportion to the storage period of empty PET bottles. With regard to the samples stored for 90 days, the maximum and average detected concentrations decreased by approximately 49% (0.039㎎/L to 0.020㎎/L) and approximately 47% (0.032㎎/L to 0.017㎎/L) compared to the samples stored for 30 days, respectively. In consideration of the demand for PET-bottled water and storage space, reducing acetaldehyde in the PET bottles to less than the odor threshold concentration (0.02 to 0.04 ㎎/L) was effective in block the characteristic acetaldehyde odor when storing empty PET bottles for about three months. In addition, although the source water injected into empty PET bottles was the same, acetaldehyde concentration varied greatly depending on the storage days of the empty PET bottles. Thus, this study confirmed that the elution of acetaldehyde in PET-bottled water was not associated with source water. The amount of residual acetaldehyde in the PET bottles migrated to detergent increased with increasing contact time with washing liquid in the cleaning process of empty PET bottles. It reduced the elution concentration in PET-bottled water and shortened the time required to remove acetaldehyde completely. With regard to the samples cleaned by washing liquid in contact with empty PET bottles for 30 seconds, the maximum detected concentration of acetaldehyde in PET-bottled water decreased by approximately 51% (0.039㎎/L to 0.019㎎/L), and 30 days were shortened for the complete removal. The cleaning process served as a preprocessing in removing residual acetaldehyde in PET bottles and was effective in blocking the off-flavor of acetaldehyde by reducing acetaldehyde to less than the odor threshold concentration in PET-bottled water in contact of empty PET bottles with washing liquid for about 30 seconds. The concentration of the acetaldehyde became higher in the PET- bottled water, because of decomposition from PET bottles was promoted by increasing migration speed eluted from the PET bottles at storage conditions of 25℃ and direct sunlight than 4℃ and room temperature. In particular, when PET bottles are exposed to direct sunlight at room temperature, the decomposition of the PET bottles is promoted by radical chain decomposition. The concentration of eluted acetaldehyde rapidly increased, and the amount of eluted acetaldehyde decreased by blocking sunlight. In order to minimize the amount of acetaldehyde migrating from PET bottles, it will be necessary to use bundle packaging materials made of papers capable of blocking sunlight or to store PET-bottled water in a dark place. Based on this study, it is expected that it will be possible for users to drink high quality odor-free PET-bottled water by performing appropriate quality control after reducing method of acetaldehyde in PET-bottled water are commercialized by manufacturers of PET bottles and PET-bottled water.
