ABSTRACT
This dissertation examines the program of the writer’s Master’s degree recital. The graduation performance includes songs of composers who represent each era and each country in the Western musical history, and this dissertation analyses the composers’ life and their master pieces; the background of each piece; the composition and characteristics of the pieces.
Austrian composer, Franz Joseph Haydn(1732-1809), established the style and formality of the Classical music. (Die Schöpfung), which was composed after listening to Georg Friedrich Händel’s , took three years to be completed with Haydn’s musical style and religious belief. This piece is composed of three parts including 34 songs of solo, duet, and chorus. In "Und gott schuf den menschen", Number 23 of Part 2, Uriel talks about the creation of a man and a woman in the image of God using recitative secco. "Mit Würd' und Hoheit angetan", Number 24 of Part 2, is Uriel’s aria with a folk-like simple melody, singing the woman’s innocence as a wife of the man.
Opera was composed in 1897 when Francesco Cilea(1866-1950) was age of 31. In fact, this piece is well-known as an incidental music of Georges Bizet(1838-1875)’s piece with a same title. An Italian script writer, Leopoldo Marenco(1831-1899), completed the opera script in Italian based on "L’Arléienne", which appears in a short story, "Letters de mon moulin", written by a French writer, Alphonse Daudet(1840-1897). "Il lamento di Federico" from Operais Federico’s aria, sung at the bedside of his brother who is sound asleep, sighing for grief due to the loss of L’Aresinne and his miserable situation.
Charles Francois Gounod(1818-1893)’s opera is composed based on Johann Wolfgang von Goethe(1749-1832)’s novel "Faust", which is considered to be the best literary work in Germany. The novel "Faust" was written for about 60 years throughout Goethe’s whole life containing a very delicate content. Gounod’s opera consists of five parts, and "Salut! demeure chaste et pure" from Part 2 is a lyrical music with a delicate sensibility along with a sense of consistency.
Gabriel-Urbain Fauré(1845-1924)’s love song, consists of three songs. The main theme is love and based on each song expresses romance, passion, anger, and vanity. This piece was composed in 1878, which was the first period of an abundant production, by setting a French writer, Charles Grandmougin’s poem to a music. tells us that love does not happen in a restricted place or in a confined time frame but happens accidentally in our lives. The first song, "Rencontre"depicts a poet falling in love with a woman, and in the second song, "Toujours", the poet cries in despair in front of the woman who is leaving him, and the third song, "Adieu" sings that no matter how long a love might seem to last it is very short.
Robert Alexander Schumann(1810-1856)’s love song, was composed in 1840 when Schumann got married. This love song was made by setting a poem written by a German Romantic poet, Heinrich Heine, to a music. This piece is composed of sixteen songs with the content and musical pieces being interrelated. Total sixteen songs are divided intothree parts: from No.1 to No.6 sings the joy of love; from No.7 to No.14 sings the agony of a broken heart; and from No.15 to No.16 sings understanding and reconciliation with regardto the past love.
