This thesis aims to investigate possible real world occurrences and applications of Dystopia and to embrace the new idea of changing Sci-fi for children and young adults in regards to characters’ perception of and practical continuation of Dystopia. At first, I look for implications for the space analysis of Dystopia based on a significance of Sci-fi and the characteristics of Dystopia. The aim of this is to devise the analysis standard to find out the spatial characteristics of Dystopia and to analyze the character's perception and practice in Korean Sci-fi for children and young adults in the 2000s. As a result, this thesis seeks to find the development direction of Korean Sci-fi for children and young adults in reference to the readers' reflective experience. Sci-fi is a genre of literature dealing with changes in life and society caused by advanced science, and suggests a new way of looking at humanity and the world. Hence, 'perception' matters to SF. Dystopia is a valuable part of Sci-fi, because it promotes awareness of social issues and contains within it a wish for social changes. The function as a critique of reality and the potential for change in Dystopia relate to the spatial changes in space of Capitalism by French philosopher Lefebvre. I modify the social concepts originated by Lefebvre, devise the analysis standard for dystopian space, and apply that to Korean Sci-fi for children and young adults in the 2000s. In accordance with the result of my analysis, Dystopia space in Sci-fi for children and young adults in the 2000s can be divided into 3 types - Type 1 is 'Dystopia with Dominated Space', Type 2 is 'Dystopia with Dominated and Resistance Space', and Type 3 is 'Dystopia with Dominated, Resistance, and Alternative Space'. In a narrative, contradictions of Dominated Space and resistance movements emerge more, advancing toward Type 3. 'Dominated Space' can lead to 'Resistance Space' and 'Alternative Space' through character's perception and practice for the spatial change in Dystopia, and character's these aspects are themselves classified into 4 steps-'Recognition and Experience', 'Recognition and Seeking', 'Critics and Choice', and 'Critics and Solidarity'. The majority of works belong to 'Recognition and Experience', that means the character isn’t truly aware of the problems associated with Dystopia. Those characters belonging to 'Recognition and Seeking' depend on parents to solve the social problems inherent in Dystopia. Some characters try to find a solution at a personal level, though they critically view social and spatial problems in Dystopia. Sci-fi with such characters is named 'Critics and Choice'. The characters in 'Critics and Solidarity' criticize Dystopian characters from various groups and band together to escape from Dystopia. Out of 17 Sci-fi works, there are just 4 that fall into the category 'Critics and Solidarity'. Children and young adults learn how to recognize current issues and how to act from Sci-fi characters who criticize society and revolt against authority in Dystopia. Therefore, Dystopia in Sci-fi has to embody spatial changes caused by characters’ cognitive development and autonomous practice. It means Sci-fi has to draw 'Dominated Space' with the power of contradiction, 'Resistance Space' with a will of change, and 'Alternative Space' with the result of spatial change together. At the same time, characters living in Dystopia have to recognize social issue critically, and escape from a stable state, depending on adults to get into adventures. When Dystopia can be the space for reality criticism, resistance, and revolution, Sci-fi for children and young adults becomes literature of perception practice, and hope for the future to readers.
