What is acting fundamentally? Is it possible to train and discipline? This thesis started from the questions regards acting and acting training to difference between acting in film and acting on stage especially focus on theory and methods for film acting. Actors persuade their role to the audience. In order to do so, actors on stage consider the distance between stage and audience and act the marked pose and clear voice. On the other hand, actors in film consider directors’ purpose of the camera angle, shot size and even more of privacy, realistic image fundamentally. Each of acting has been developed while acting on stage is supposed to act realistic in front of audiences, acting in film is supposed to shoot and project on the screen. Therefore, actors must recognize that acting in film is different from acting on stage and fully concern about films’ language. There is more in needs that actors acting in films show concentration in complicated circumstances such as scene and shots are mixed and imagination in front of camera that there is no counterpart. It is main different from acting on stage. In addition, the camera skill such as close-up contains micro muscle acting and mumbling to make the film plentiful. Film actors have to expect that their acting is now combined with shooting, editing and sound mixing. It means there is more to experience and train. This thesis considers method acting theories and discourses not only acting styles in Hollywood but also training skills. In the modern sense, acting training progenitor was Stanislavskii and his system theory influenced in 1920’s American methods acting, it became main stream in 1950’s. Method acting in America was started mainly Stanislavskii’s system theory and followed by unique methods which are Lee Strasberg, Stella Adler, Sanford Meisner. This theorization applied in real methods such as improvisation acting, etúde, researching character and audition casting. This basic methods commonly used in recent acting methods not only in the film but only on the stage. Moreover, this thesis analyzed and considered that distinguishing acting in films and acting on stage such as shooting and representation of acting image; representation of recording actor’s sounds, relationship between director and actor and acting in films at the studio. It is certain that actors can be developed by training and education. Although, talent is as important as passion and effort, in the movie industry, popularity is not always fair with actors’ effort; acting education programme in the University has accumulated the developed theories and practices that acting education curriculum for major in acting students. Acting is not just imitate someone but experience the character’s life and communicate with the audiences. Therefore, actors realize and awake not to be lazy training and learning acting to be able to understand the characters in films. Hope this thesis finds useful in Korean education in film industry and trust that the many great actors are to be made.
