Newspaper is one of the prominent mediums which inform and analyse various aspects of our society. Considering the fact that newspaper articles and editorials are read by many people all over the world, they often form and reflect popular public opinions and attitudes towards social problems.
This thesis is predominantly focuses on newspaper articles and editorials on the topic of racism in the Korea Times and the New York Times. Racism is described as discrimination by people against different races and is often caused by ethnocentric thoughts and hostile attitudes towards differences. This discriminatory attitude is a growing problem as inter-ethnic and cross-cultural understandings are considered as important developmental factors throughout the world. In order to examine the attitudes toward racism in Korea and the United States, I analyzed the following articles and editorials from the Korea Times: ‘Racism Paints K-pop into Corner’, ‘Foreign Workers Fall Victim to Discriminatory Rules’, ‘Korea’s New Multicultural Society’ and ‘No Racial Prejudice’. From the New York Times the following are chosen: ‘50 Years After March, Views of Fitful Progress’, ‘In Job Hunt, College Degree Can’t Close Racial Gap’, ‘Debt and the Racial Wealth Gap’ and ‘Even Now, There’s Risk in ‘Driving While Black’.
The first part of the thesis evaluates newspaper articles from the Korea Times and the New York Times in broad and narrow contexts. Titles and structures were considered from a broad perspective, and quotations and adverbs were analyzed from a narrow perspective. Reviewing the texts, I found that the Korea Times put great emphasis on seriousness of the racism itself, whereas the New York Times evaluated the problem from various viewpoints.
The second part also focuses on analysing, from both broad and narrow perspectives, the editorials. This thesis also analyses the expressions that impose obligations on the readers since editorials are more persuasive and subjective than articles. By investigating the structures and expressions of the articles, I found that the Korea Times emphasized solving the problem by suggesting solutions and the New York Times concentrated on the analysis of causes for racism in the United States.
The findings suggest that the attitudes towards racism in the Korea Times and the New York Times, represented by the design of the structures of the text and their ways of addressing social issues, shows a difference in approach in terms of each countries culture and its impact on articles and editorials.
