Nurses have exposed to direct contact to diagnosed patients in pandemic influenza, which threatens nurses to be infected and to be a source of infecting others. This descriptive study was designed to identify nurses’ knowledge, attitude and perceptions of personal protective equipment(PPE) in pandemic influenza. Data were collected from May 16, 2016 to May 27, 2016 targeting nurses working at a tertiary general hospital in Seoul where had accepted diagnosed patients during Middle East Respiratory Syndrome(MERS) outbreak in 2015. Out of 165 surveyed distributed, 154 of them were analyzed by frequency, percentile, independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, and Pearson Correlation using SPSS 24.0 program. For research tools, researcher developed total 40 items, 20 items in true-false type for assessing knowledge level and 5 items each for attitudes and perceptions in 5-points Likert scales, which were based on guidelines of World Health Organization, American Center for Disease Control, and Korean Center for Disease Control. The reliabilities of the tool for attitudes and perception were Cronbach’s α 0.777 and 0.600, respectively. The results were as follows: 1) The clinical experience of research participants was 7.25 years in average. 2) More than three forth(77.9%) of the subjects have experienced caring of diagnosed or suspected patients equipped by PPE during MERS outbreak. Most of them were exposed to educational programs regarding to PPE(84.4%), and have read PPE manuals(87.0%). 3) Nurses’ knowledge on PPE scored 76.95±8.56 from 100 in average. 4) In the attitudes towards PPE, participants strongly agreed to ‘I will work again equipped with PPE in case of the next outbreaks(4.04/5.00)’, ‘I can endure discomfort from PPE, if it is for my patients(3.86/5.00)’ in its order. 5) In perceptions of PPE, participants strongly agreed to ‘PPE can protect me from infection during pandemic influenza(3.97/5.00).’ Also they perceived that goggle(3.79/5.00) and powered air purifying respirator(3.72/5.00) interfere nursing activities more. 6) There were significant differences in nurses’ knowledge on PPE depending on marital status, clinical experiences, and compliance to administrative guideline; in attitudes toward PPE depending on education, experience of caring diagnosed patient, exposure to PPE education and reading manuals; in perceptions of PPE depending on cohabitants, experience of caring diagnosed patients, exposure to PPE education and reading manuals. 7) In correlation between knowledge, attitudes and perceptiohns, there was a positive correlation between attitude and cognition. Conclusively, it is verified that the nurses’ exposure to education on PPE gives positive influence on the level of knowledge, reading manuals, and caring of diagnosed patients influence on positive attitude toward PPE. To strengthen responding ability in case of pandemic influenza, pre-education on PPE and precise manuals are critical. This study has a meaning that it is the first study of measuring nurses’ knowledge, attitudes and perceptions of PPE in Korea. For the further research, it is recommended to carry out repetitive studies targeting nurses working at diverse levels of medical facilities, and targeting diverse healthcare providers.
