Purpose : The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship of nurses’s experience, homophobia, and competency toward sexual minority by making a descriptive research. Method : This study was performed between April 26, 2016 and May 03, 2016 at two hospitals where are located in Seoul and Guri, Gyeonggi-do, Korea. Participants were 154 nurses who were selected by convenience sampling and data was collected using self-administered questionnaires. The collected data were analyzed by a statistical package SPSS WIN 21.0. Statistical data on frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation were obtained, and t-test, ANOVA, Scheffé analysis and multiple regression analysis were carried out. The instrument used to assess homophobia was Kim Yong-Hee and Bahn Geon-Ho(1980)’ The Korean Index of Homophobia which is based on Hudson and Ricketts(1980)’ Index of Homophobia and examined its reliability and validity. The instrument used to nurses’s cometency was Woo Sarah(2014)’s Scale that translated and modified Bidell(2005)’s Sexual Orientation Counselor Competency Scale(SOCCS). Result : First, nurses answered no experience 91.6%, 92.2%, and 69.5% about each question of education experience, family or friends’ experience and workplace experience on sexual minority. Second, nurses’ homophobia got a mean of 83.32±14.14 and nurses got 94.9±11.1 in competency. Third, Nurses who were unmarried, working in a medical ward and having family or friends’ experience had lower score for homophobia. Forth, nurses’ competency revealed significantly differences according to marital status, education, work experience, and experience with sexual minority at workplace. Fifth, nurses’ homophobia was related negatively with nurses’ competency, but a relationship of nurses’ competency was positively shown among skill, attitude and knowledge. Lastly, as to the results of the regression analysis on the influential factors for nurses’ competency, lower homophobia, and more work experience and contact with sexual minority at workplace had a significant effect on nurses’s competency. Conclusion : The result of this study demonstrates that nurses’ negative attitude towards sexual minority has significant effect on their competency. Therefore, we should consider developing various methods to boost up nurses’ competency by reducing their homophobia. As a result of this study it determined that nursing education should focus on strengthen the cultural competence on sexual minority. In conclusion, health educators should provide and expand cultural competence education programs on sexual minority for nurses. Nurses should continually develop their ability to promote cultural competence on sexual minority. The development of such positive programs is expected to bring positive change to their attitude toward sexual minority patients.
