This study is a cross-sectional survey study intended to understand the relationship and influential factors of the knowledge of the nurses on fall injuries on the health conviction and fall prevention activities. For this purpose, 108 nurses in general hospitals located in the City of Seoul were interviewed using questionnaires over the period from June 1 to June 8, 2016. The tools used to measure the level of knowledge of the nurses was based on the tool developed by Cheolgyu Kim (2002), which as modifiedand supplemented for this study. The tool to measure the health conviction was developed by Jeongsoon Moon (1990) and modified/supplemented by Minkyoung Park (2013). The tool used to measure the fall prevention activities was developed by Cheolgyu Kim (2002). Data analysis was performed using SSPS 19.0 program, using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, and Person test, while the verification was performed using Duncan test method. The result of this study can be summarized as follows; 1) As for the general characteristics of the nurses, of the 108 participants, 106 were female (98.1%). And, as for the age distribution, the majority, that is, 69 of them, was in their 20s (63.9%). 83.9% (90) of them were ordinary nurses, and 41 (37.9%) received fall prevention training once or twice within the past year. As for the number of fall prevention training sessions, the majority of them, 84, received once or twice for the past year. 2) Of the general characteristics of the participants, the knowledge level on fall injuries was higher among the female participants than was among the male participants (p<0.05). And, the group who received the fall prevention training showed a higher level of knowledge. However, the difference due to the number of training sessions taken was not observe (p<0.05). 3) Of the health conviction factors, the susceptibility, perceivedseverity, perceived impairment, and opportunity of actions did not differ among the participants as per their general characteristics. The perceived benefits differedby the age groups and was the highest in the 30 -39 age group (p<0.05). 4) The level of knowledge on the fall injuries did not show significant relationships with the health conviction and the fall prevention activities. Of the health convictions of the nurses, the perceived sensitivities (r=0.343, p<0.01) and the perceived severity (r=0.196, p<0.05), perceived benefits(r=0.470, p< 0.01), and opportunity for action (r=0.391, p<0.01) had significant relationships with fall prevention activities. However, the perceived impairment did not show a significant relationship with the fall prevention activities. 5) As for the relationshipbetween the health convictions and the fall prevention activities appearing in each question, it appeared that, in the perceived impairment, ‘the instructions of the hospital on the fall prevention activities within the hospital is not sufficient (p<0.01, r=-0.247)’ of the interviewees. As manifested in the answer that ‘the educational materials (pamphlets, etc.) on fall prevention activities have been issued to me (p<0.01, r=0.340),’ it is believed that frequent distribution of the fall prevention education materials and emphasis on the need of such education by the hospital will enhance the fall prevention activities. In summary, the influence of the fall injury knowledge of the nurses on the health conviction and fall prevention activities was not confirmed. But, it was confirmed that health convictions affected the fall prevention activities. However, it is difficult to compare the result of this study, as there is scarcely any preceding study on the fall injury knowledge, health conviction, and fall prevention activities in South Korea.
