The objective of this research was to determine whether one-person media, such as YouTube, Internet broadcasts, and podcasts, can function as new culture journalism alternatives as criticism disappears and culture journalism continues to deliver only simple information and gossip and to grow weak. The study analyzed the subjectivity of users of The Hankyoreh’s culture podcast, Surplus Salon, using the Q methodology to determine what motivates them to use Surplus Salon and what, if any, of those motivations could be interpreted as culture journalism elements. The analysis revealed that Surplus Salon users could be categorized into two subjective types. The first type, named the “critical information appreciators” in the study, is motivated to use Surplus Salon by the joy received from in-depth criticisms on culture. The second type, named the “professional host appreciators” in the study, is motivated by gaining high-quality content from a professional host. Review of the analysis findings also suggested that users of Surplus Salon expect critical and entertaining information, a trustworthy host, and expert knowledge from the podcast. These findings are linked to core elements of culture journalism. Those who felt frustrated by the established media’s failure to properly realize culture journalism were choosing culture podcasts exhibiting qualities of one-person media to quench their thirst. This study is significant in that it presents the possibility and directionality for the established media, which currently faces a crisis due to technological advancements and platform changes, to utilize new platforms such as one-person media, internet broadcasts, and podcasts to seek a new form of journalism.
